when to condsider antipsychotics

Posted by jesus on February 17, 2003, at 22:23:15

For anybody who has or currently is taking antipsychotics...when did you approach your pdoc about this? I am experiancing minor psychotic episodes, and it may be nothing... but because most psychotic disorders are very degenerative I'd like to get on it early (unfortunatley, most patients w/ psychotic disorders are'nt treated until the later stages of degeneration, which is harder to treat)...As for symptoms, I experiance voices, seeing 'people' who aren't there, thinking ppl are talking about me, acting strange, extreme religiosity (temporal lobe epilepsy?)...its strange b/c there is no record of schizophrenia in my family...if anybody's going thru something similar I'd like to hear from you..thanx

Now is the time to consider. I think those symptoms are far from minor.

Go to the Dr. IMMEDIATELY and get a thorough physical exam. Also, if refered to a psychiatrist you will have a Mental State Exam, this will confirm a diagnosis. You seem to be experiencing psychotic sx on the one hand but you don't sound psychotic to me. Reality testing is intact because you know the things aren't truly there. However, see a dr ASAP.

Keep Safe,
Ace.

Hi Jesus,

It sounds like you are suffering psychotic symptoms. These can be part of depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and some other organic conditions. I have schizophrenia and the antipsychotics work very well for my psychotic symptoms. I strongly recommend trying an antipsychotic. Only when you are better can you truly understand the severity of this sort of illness. It is severe, and it requires agressive treatment.

It is not strange to have schizophrenia and not have a family history of it. In fact, most people who have schizophrenia do not have a family history of schizophrenia. I hope this helps.

There have been some studies that shown
those who took Vit E supps developed very
little in the Way of TD. Vit E is supposed
to regulate dopamine nerve growth in some way.

Dr Stoll found this out.

And who knows maybe soon enought they'll
find a way to treat it.

Hi.

> I am experiancing minor psychotic episodes, and it may be nothing...

It is not nothing. It is urgent. Letting it go unchecked might allow for your condition to worsen and become less responsive to treatment.

Do you ever get seriously depressed or manic? If so, you might be suffering from schizoaffective disorder, which is a single disorder that looks like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia occurring simultaneously. You might also suffer from a bipolar psychotic depression / mixed state. Either way, an antipsychotic is definitely indicated.

you mentioned TLE and since you are aware of what is happening..I'm not that knowledgable regarding psychosis but you may want to describe your symtpoms to a neurologist. TLE symptoms can be like what you are experiencing also. It could be either..even s/th else?

Do you have any more details on the studies and/or results? This might mean I could go back on Risperdal, one med that actually worked for me, but I started getting very twitchy after a short time, and my pdoc and I decided stopping would be good.
