doubt and time: my two worst enemies

Posted by matt66 on February 6, 2003, at 11:55:08

Nardil was like the third drug I tried and it began working within hours. It worked for three weeks and then the therapuetic effects wore off. Since then I have tried EVERYTHING (including ECT) with no response. Now I'm trying the nardil again at a high dose, but I'm having the familiar difficulty of giving the med time to work. I think that since it kicked in almost immediately the first time, the more time I give it now without a response, the less hope I have of it working. This has been my problem with all the meds I've tried. I obsess and look for the smallest signs of improvement, and when I find myself in a familiar situation of anxiety etc., I panic and want to change meds. I know there's no logic to all this mess, but has anyone had an experience where one drug worked immediately and then crapped out, to find that future responses took a lot of waiting? It's so hard to sit on a med for me, especially when I know that it had been working at half this dose the day I started it initially. I'm constantly scheming and thinking of changing meds when I don't get a result (or positive side effects like good dreams etc) right away.

What is really hard also is how the system is underfunded and it takes months on waiting lists sometimes to get into a really good specialist unless you want to pay out of your own pocket. My doctor is only in from usually 10am to 3-4pm and for those of us with horrid insomnia who sleep during the day, if you aren't awake and go to their appointment when they want it then too bad for me. Or if you are suicidal and they make you wait months well they just say "too bad". We've got a system, doctors, a government and society that just doesn't care about people anymore, and is more interested in making money and don't care if people die because of it. But if you are rich and usually happy and insensitive then you got it made. We can do so much better for people and as a society that cares, but people don't care. Marc

thats excellent Writing,,, One little victory. I got something out of it
By the way,, I read that Psychiatrists get the most cancellations of any profession.
Its IMPORTANT to get alot of sleep the night before an appointment. THEY hate to have you cancel weeks before.(I think they keep track) They consider this a sign of Lack of Interest and self -centeredness.
Ive never been late to mine yet. I consider my health that important, and Im overpaying.
Plus if I dont keep going.. someone else will fill my time,, If you know what I mean?
