LEXAPRO - 20mg - half of tablet ???

Posted by mikal on February 3, 2003, at 7:33:19

Funny thing happened recently. My Doc phoned in the prescription for my Lex and it was a 20mg dose instead of a 10mg. I didn't notice until I got home. Normally (Ha-what ever that is;) I would call and ask for a new script of correct dose. However it was a Friday evening and I wouldn't be able to talk to him until Monday... two days too long without Lexapro. I don't want to go back to that place I was at w/ the Panic and Anxiety... So I took a 20mg and was layed out pretty heavily... felt just like 1st day on Lexapro... not a good feeling. So since, I've been cutting it in half (sort of; I'll explain.) I wasn't sure if anyone else had tried this, and today I saw that there are a bunch of us trying to conserve our $$$. 10mg works fine for me, and would rather not have to adjust to 20mg, however, I'm having a hell of a time cutting the tablet in half. I know this sounds a bit cheap or seedy, but does anybody have any "tips" on how to most effectively get a tablet to break in half. I've been having problems getting even pieces, and do not want to waste my time and $$$.

Mike, like many other prescription drugs, Lexapro costs about the same regardless of the dose. A 20 mg pill and a 10 mg pill of Lexapro cost the same. So you can save a lot of money by cutting.

I have lots of pill cutting experience. Some pills, such as Celexa, are made to be easily broken in 2 equal parts by hand. But Lexapro has to be cut in half. One way is to use a pill cutter from the drug store. But they are not very accurate with small pills such as Lexapro.

The easiest and most accurate method is to use a razor blade knife. Put the pill on a flat surface such as the back of a glass plate or plastic plate. Then cut the Lexapro in half along the pill's perforation. Do not cut at an angle. Cut straight down.

Mike,
I split mine all the time. Sometimes I even split the 20mg into 5mg. I bought a pill splitter from the grocery store pharmacy or K-Mart and it has worked great for years. It holds the tablet in place very well and gives a clean cut. Of course, that means another trip to the store but it is worth the investment (a couple dollars.)

Pill splitter always works pretty good. Not always perfectly accurate, but good enough. Good Luck!
