PROVIGIL...TRIAL STARTED : )

Posted by disney4 on January 26, 2003, at 11:11:38

Today is my first day, and it seems to be going very well. I feel better than I have in a while. I am very calm, focused, and in good spirits. I hope this continues. I am very sensitive to meds, and am only taking 25mg a day to start. I am not sure if this med will continue its AD effects, but I can only hope.

Good luck with Provigil (modafinil). I took it for a while, and found that it provided some real benefits. It was energizing but not anxiety-provoking, as some stimulating meds (especially Wellbutrin!) are for me. It also seemed to improve my mood and enthusiasm. I took about 50 - 100 mg/day, and that was about right for me. I had no problems with insomnia, or any other substantial side effects.

I changed to Adderall because the goal was ADD treatment, and Provigil didn't help enough with concentration issues. Adderall is better for me in this respect, and provides the other benefits that Provigil did. But I think that Provigil has real potential for some people; my psychiatrist says he's had very good success with it for certain patients who haven't responded well to other meds. A good friend of mine who's bipolar and taking a combination of mood stabilizers and ADs started it recently, and says it's markedly increased his alertness and motivation.

All the best!

You know what's weird (and speaks for the maturity of this board)?

Of all the talk of Provigil, I've not come across that stupid media-induced hype about its use as an anti-sleep agent.

A journalist for the Washington Post took it for 48 hours, writing an article on it while she took it. She said it turned everything "on" for her motivation wise, and how she could really "feel" it working.

Journalists are so lame. They're always looking for something novel, so when they hear about a novel drug they go crazy and think about all the implications it may have for pop culture. Not once do they ever stop to think some people actually have to use it for a legitimate purpose, and how that itself is important and note-worthy.

Good point. The next time one of those articles appears in TIME or NEWSWEEK or wherever, why don't you write a letter to the editor expressing what you just wrote here?

I wrote Esquire a few weeks ago on the same subject. They seem to do a minimal amount of research or only print research that backs up their sometimes ludicrous claims.

They have done their share of keeping reefer madness alive and well.

Thanks for responding. After I posted, I experienced a pretty bad headache that wouldn't let up. I also woke up in the middle of the night with ankle pain, although I had a very sound sleep, and woke up today feeling better than I have in a while. I didn't take my dose today, because I am not sure it is right for me in the long term. My main symptons are depression (I'm bipolar,) anxiety, and OCD. I am only taking Neurontin, and Klonopin at this time. I think I need an AD, because I want to have a remission of my depressive symptoms, and not just daily control. I binge eat at times, and can't tolerate SSRI's. I have already had failed trials with most of the current atypical AD's as well. I am considering Buspar, because of its profile as a dopamine enhancer, and mild side effect profile. I am a little concerned about TD, because I understand it is similar in chemical make up to Zyprexa, although in a much milder way.
