Taking Effexor every 3'd day or every other day is not effective to withdraw from it, in fact it may make things worse. Effexor's half life is less than a day. Restart at a lower dose and continue to taper.

Effexor withdrawal is horrible -- been there, done that. Sorry you are in the midst of it. However, my pdoc helped me tremendously by prescribing 25 mg. Effexor tablets. That way I was able to taper even more slowly. I took it every day ... 25 mg. for a week, then half a tablet for another week, then a quarter, etc. It really worked for me. (I think I recall having to take half in the a.m. and half in the p.m. because the 25 mg. tablets were not sustained release). Anyway, before that point, I also got stuck at 37.5 mg. The 25 mg. tablets did the trick.

Best of luck to you. You will make it through! Hang in there ...

Hi...You really should try dimenhydrinate (Dramamine in the U.S...Gravol in Canada)..as it worked *perfectly* for me and nausea. I am not sure if you can get it in the U.S. without a prescription...but you can in Canada. I am not sure what the brand name is outside North America..but you should be able to find it, or any other anti-nausea drug elsewhere. (It's anti-nausea...anti-vertigo...and may make you a bit sleepy.) It works to almost kill Effexor withdrawal symptoms right away.

Good luck...
Jay

If my experience is typical it *will* stop in a few days. And according to what I've read you can use other meds to mask the withdrawal symptoms.

I tapered off Effexor over a few weeks. I think I was up to 150 mg., don't remember. I got hit by withdrawal 36 hours after the last dose. Vertigo and "electric shocks". I lay in bed without moving for 3 days, then started dragging myself around. It took a week or two for it to stop completely.

I was so pissed at my pdoc I didn't even call her. The *last* thing I wanted was more drugs. Maybe I should have, but I was taking 3 or 4 other psychotropics and felt like that was enough.

I was up to 225 mg of effexor xr, and when I switched to Lexapro, my doctor originally had me on a 3-week taper. I was so dizzy and my anxiety had me physically shaking, she ended up increasing the taper amount and having me on a slower taper of 6 weeks. It helps if you are tapering to another medication (when I tapered off Celexa the first time, I had no replacement med, and it took 2 months before I was no longer dizzy and didn't need some Celexa in my system). So go slower on the taper, and I hope that works out for you!

I had the exact same experience, and I can empathize with you, it was really horrible. what helped me was going VERY slowly. don't take it every other day yet. take it every day, but get a smaller dosage. i believe effexor comes in 25 mg too, and then you can break that in half. that's how i was able to wean off. email me with any ques. ive been through that dizzy withdrawal, it sucks

My dizziness lasted about one week. Thank God it's over.
