Effexor and Trileptal question..

Posted by RWF on January 2, 2003, at 18:17:18

I am a 24 year old male who was diagnosed with Anxiety and Depression in October of 2001. I was supposed to take a number of meds (SSRI's and Wellbutrin), however I was too scared to because of the effects it may have had on my mind.

Two months ago I caved in and let my doctor prescribe me 37.5 milligrams of Effexor XR one time daily.

I also have been taking 0.5 to 1 milligram of Lorazepam when I need it...mostly at bed time to help me sleep.

Lately I have been feeling these paranoid thoughts about my wife cheating on me, however I know that she is not. I am wondering if these thoughts can be attributed to the Effexor XR???

I never act out towards her on these thoughts because deep down I know that they are not and cannot be true. My wife is the most wonderful person in the world, but I still get angry for unknown reasons because of these thoughts and I do not want them to ever control my actions.

I told my doctor about these thoughts and he prescribed me 150 milligrams of Trileptal. I am scared to death to take this medicine because of the double vision side effect. I will not take it unless I know about this medicine. Has anyone ever tried this drug before?

Has the Effexor ever made anyone feel like this before?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.

What did your doctor say to justify the use of Trileptal?

He didn't really say much other than that it would make me stop feeling the paranoid thoughts. Does this sound right???

I want to take it if it will work, but I am scared that it will have bad side effects.

It sounds strange to me. Trileptal is used off-label for bipolar disorder. Effexor and other antidepressants can trigger psychotic symptoms such as paranoia in susceptible people (bipolar or not). I would be wanting to find out what is *causing* the paranoia first thing, and get your DX straightened out. Hey, if the Effexor is making you paranoid, then maybe you need a different med to treat your depression. I'm taking just a little bit of Trileptal now for bipolar depressive symptoms and it is helping, but I would be doubtful it would do me a lot of good for paranoid ideation.

I personally only had the paranoid state for 2 days and have been fine since. However mine only happened at night when I was sleeping or just woke up. I personally thought that someone was in the house to kill my family and myself. Which I beleive is my biggest fear. I believe that is why it was my source of paranoia.

I don't think that after 3 months that you should still be feeling this way. My advice change meds, fast.
