Hi, I'm new here. I've been taking Wellbutrin, 150mg/day, for about 2 weeks, and 300mg/day for about 3 days. I'm taking it for depression and withdrawal symptoms from food addiction. Anyway, it worked for a few days but now it's not working at all; my depression is just as bad as without it (though perhaps it would be even worse if I weren't on it). What I'm wondering is, is this normal? Also, can I take St. John's Wort at the same time? Thanks!

M,
You need to give the Wellbutrin time to work. Medications for depression normally take atleast 3 weeks to take effect. Read through the messages posted on this board, there's some great information here. Don't stop taking your medication or increase your dose without talking to your doctor. I've suffered from depression my entire life. I first started on medication in 1989. After 2 weeks of medication, I was even more depressed because I thought the medicine wasn't working. For me, taking medication was my last hope of leading a "normal", happy life. When the meds didn't seem to work, I thought my situation was hopeless. After about 4 weeks, I realized I was happy! The lights had been turned on in my world. There is hope, don't give up too soon. You've found a wonderful place to hang out in cyberspace. The psycho-babble board is filled with intelligent, compassionate people who really understand what you're going through. Welcome :^)

I also have been struggling with trying to objectively discern if Wellbutrin is helping me or not- I was previously using Serzone but it made me way too sleepy - I was thrilled at the lack of side effects when I switched to Wellbutrin...but now I find it really hard to say whether or not its helping me- it has been several months now and, I might add, the price alone is enough to make me depressed - I have heard some people say it's the greatest thing they ever did - unfortunately I don't think I can count myself among them - I believe I will probably ask my Doctor to switch me to something else next week - once again it's "back to the drawing board" which is admitedly a bit disheartening once again-I'll be watching for posts to see what others have to say-..just found this site this evening here at work on a slower than usual night so I thought I'd join up! Dear Chronic,
How much do you take? Maybe you could add more.
I ask because I have been wondering the same thing about Wellbutrin... I am on 200 mg in the morning, 100 mid-day, and another 100 in the evening. I was a True Believer when I first went on it (about 18 months ago), not least of all because I dropped the 30 lbs I had gained on Zoloft. But it was working better then as an anti-depressant. I'm thinking that 400 mg per day should chase away whatever ails me, but I am still depressed about half the time, on average... Wonder if it poops out like the SSRIs?
Anyway, feel better,
Wendy

Wendy, Just wanted to be sure you're not experimenting w/Wellbutrin beyond 400 mg/day w/o your doc's direct participation -- carries a serious risk of seizures! Best of luck w/it though, its not doing it for me....

> -MattHey, Matt,
No problem, but thanks for your concern! I have read that. But also have talked to people who say that the seizure potential is exaggerated... Who really knows? I guess it's because our reactions are so very different to the same meds. (Ever feel like a lab rat?)
To see the discussions about seizures on Wellbutrin, do an advanced search on this site using both of the terms (Wellbutrin + seizures) - if you've never done this, it's a great way to get individuals' reactions, and also, usually, from the smart people on this site, references to the medical literature on the topic.
What are you doing for an AD since the wellbutrin is not working for you? Any solutions?
Best to you,
Wendy

Dear JYL,So what is your pdoc prescribing instead of the wellbutrin? Gotta pull out of that, woman. Have you spoken to the pdoc about it?
Feel better,
Wendy
