head noise

Posted by nita on December 27, 2002, at 13:58:44

I read some messages from earlier posting about others having noises in their head or brain. I have not been able to describe these noises to my Dr. or anyone else. They remind me of an electrical current shutting off and on inside my head. I have been given antibiotics (sp) and other such medicine. I take paxil, been diagnosed as having cyclothymia. I have dyslexia, can't spell worth darn, but have been gifted as an artist with a degree in fine arts. my mood swings several times a day, but all this does not interrupt my ability to work, it infact enhances it. I try to stay in the field of art, or at least be able to use my ability in a work place. I am also very emotional. Had polio as an infant. So happy to find you all. Thought I was alone.

Hi nita,

I have never had the head noises you have described, but was wondering if it's possible they could be a side effect from the Paxil? Or did it start happening before you started taking Paxil? Just wondering because I have heard people mention some type of "mind zaps" or something when they've tried to withdraw from it. I was on Paxil before and I never had anything like that happen (even when I quit taking it), but it does seem to happen to a lot of people.

Another thing that struck me was that you are on Paxil with being cyclothymic. Did a psychiatrist prescribe it for you after diagnosing you as cyclothymic? Just wondering because taking SSRI's alone without a mood stabilizer can bring on mania. I know because it happened to me (with Paxil as a matter of fact). I had taken it for anxiety and then after becoming manic, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Glad you joined us - there a lot of knowledgeable people on here and it does help to find people who are going through the same kinds of things...

Krysti

Thank you Krysti, was on Prozac for 5 yrs, lost three people, 2 to old age, one at 57 of cancer. After that I just fell apart. I have a counselor, and a Dr. I try to explain how I feel to both, so hard. It is a noise I have never heard before. I once before any medications ran movies. They were so beautiful. Now they are gone, replaced by "static". Rather have the movies.

It didn't happen to me with Paxil, but it did with Wellbutrin. I described it as a chain-saw running constantly. It wasn't there in the morning, but by afternoon it was. It got worse after I'd take my second pill. Now I'm on Lexapro and it only happens once in a great while.

Last Thanksgiving, I noticed the constant sound of loud static. I don't know if it had always been there. Some days it bothers me more than others. I tend to go through phases when I am overly aware of things my body is doing, which doesn't necessarily mean they've never done that.

One day, it was quiet (I had my earplugs in), and I heard a lot of white noise between my ears. It's sometimes louder (or more noticeable) than at other times.

beardy : )>

That is exactly what happens to me. I notice it at times and then I don't. I notice it more before I fall asleep, that is the reason for the xanax. I also notice that I have difficult times reading then it clears up. I have so many moods during the day now, as 5 yrs ago or so on the prozac (which I thought and still think is a meracle drug), I had mood swings that lasted 3 days to a week, but now it is hour by hour. I think that they are not as severe now though, and that might be the whole idea behind the change to Paxil. I guess this mood thing will be with me for the rest of my life. I'm glad for an explination. I do find life more even with Paxil/Xanax. The medication does not interfere with my ideas or my art, have a "million" idea's, but not as impulsive as I was 2-3 yrs ago. Even though I don't understand the makeing of medications I do trust my Dr. to know what he is doing. I actually do feel better, just want to understand and know the workings of it all, disease/medications.

Trying to go to sleep was definitely the worst. I also had the feeling of either "bouncing" or "spinning" similar to when you've had too much to drink. Have you noticed that?

I too have had occasional mind noise, mostly a little faint static here and there, at the worst periods I'd even seen a little static around me, and its ALWAYS CONNECTED to extended panic attacks or panic state. My panic states usually occurs from heightend physical and mental arousal. I too am sensitive to bodily or chemical changes. Its always worst at NIGHTS, go figure! And, If my arm goes numb just for 20 seconds, I'll almost go Nuts. For me IT all started when I tried paxil for a week about two years ago. On the very first day of Paxil I saw and heard a little static, like faint crickets, all coming from the over stimulation of paxil and the fear of being on it. (I had a phobia of medications that I had to get over). Threw my paxil into the toilet and recovered immediately!
I was ok for a while on Remeron (another anti-depressant), for at least six months. BUT THEN two months ago I became agitated following a six month period of increasing frequency of small panic attacks, which two months ago peaked into a period of static/or mind noise, with some weird sleep disturbance from the heightened arousal. My brain also got busier, right before dozing off! Plus extreme irritablness. I had to go on a Gabinergic anti-convulsant to smash that evil streak dead. Which it did.
My theory is: the static is a product of too much Norepehephrine (I could never spell that one, folks) OR a sudden increase or elevation of serontonin. Maybe dopamine is also involved. BUT The only thing that will take it away is something that will definitely SEDATE YOU or at least SLOW YOU down. Because you are being over stimulated somehow, and panic disorder is often indicative of physical arousal. Some studies now point to this. Its not always an agoraphobic thing you know. I also notice it doesn't take much for me to develop tinnutis, I stay away from night clubs now. So maybe some inner ear disturbance is involved; on the other hand I've read posts where people experienced inner ear disturbances from sssri's.
Hope it helps!

Me too. Have not been a night club for 15 yrs. Just would rather be by myself, or at work,(an art related job). I just get tired of explaining my desposition, mood, etc. I had the mind noise before Paxil, and ran brain movies before Prozac. ???
