Side effect with Effexor, underlying rage?

Posted by Dysfunk on December 20, 2002, at 21:53:37

I have been on Prozac for a long time and was no longer feeling the benefits. For the past 6 months I have been adding in Effexor to a low dose of Prozac. Initially, I thought it was working pretty well, but felt I still did not reach the best dosage and I could still feel better. Now, I am beginning to feel this underlying rage and tension and have explosive episodes over seemingly nothing. Has anyone experienced this side effect? My doctor feels we may have passed the correct dose and gone too far, so I am now beginning to back off of it. The worst side effects for me: I sweat profusely from it (face and armpits), and feel generally agitated. I am curious to hear if others are experiencing these feelings.

I got it.. badly. I'd not had the problem before.
When I had nothing to be hostile about I would get hostile about things long ago dealt with.
They wouldn't get out of my head.

As I had no one around to vent on which was probably a good thing, the only way I could seemingly rid myself of the hostility was self-abuse. After the tension disappeared I was a crying suicidal mess.
After I stopped the Effexor, the behaviors stopped as well.
I had been on Prozac previously too.

I got the same problem when combining
remeron and Celexa, I would be just
so irritable. Like Gabbix, things from
the past, that I had long since let go,
came back with a vengence.

It just goes to show how the mind works,
It feels a certain way to begin with,
then it makes up reality to match the
emotion.

You might want to taper down the Effexor,
and perhaps adding something else.

I (and other studies have found) that adding
Folic Acid, to prozac and similar SSRIs can
dramatically increase the response rate.

Good Luck

Hi Dysfunk,

I too, had the exact same problem with Effexor. I would have fits of rage over stupid little things, and I would especially rage at my husband.
It really was out of my control. But, after a while that seemed to pass, and then I began to gain weight and get extremely tired from effexor. I kept talking about my diminishing energy level. It just wasn't the right drug for me. But, I must say it did help with the depression, but I became too tired to enjoy anything. The highest dose I reached was 225mg. My current pdoc said that those side effects were from too much drug in my system. (toxic effects).
Hope this gives you a little more insight.
