Lexapro and agitation, what to do???

Posted by rainbowlight on December 17, 2002, at 18:46:47

I thought it was anxiety, today I realize this med is making me agitated (can't sit still, short tempered). Last week I was on 2.5 mgs. this week I am on 5 mgs. Is it maybe too much? Side Effect that will go away? Wrong med for me? Any advice, I am climbing the walls! LOL!

sounds like akathisia, which is common for me on SSRIs. I would call your pdoc and tell him, there is no reason for you to be so uncomfortable- there are too many other meds out there. take care, judy

Judy is right about the akathisia. For some reason I get the worst of it from SSRI's. *Sometimes*, it is good because I will get up and get stuff accomplished (albeit haphazardly), but oftentimes it is manifested as extreme anticipatory anxiety/restlessness. Wellbutrin made me agitated, too, but I didn't putter around in circles all over my house like I do on higher doses of SSRI. If gravity worked significantly less well, I would literally be climbing walls (and ceilings), too ;)

Just a thought, but have you ever tried Serzone (or been able to tolerate it)?? That one *reduced* the restlessness a bunch (just couldn't see straight!).

Yep, tried Serzone and everything else under the sun, lol! I am running out of options. Remember me, the one with all the Zoloft problems? I probably drove ya crazy with all my questions. Well I quit the Zoloft a month ago, thought it was the culprit behind my 25 pound weight gain. HOWEVER, a month later I have not lost an ounce, even after working out like mad on the treadmill. I am beginning to think it might be the Remeron. However, I didn't gain the weight right after I started the Remeron, it was months later. Could that happen?? I am SOOOOO frustrated. I loved the Zoloft, and can't seem to find a suitable replacement for anxiety. I have tried all the SSRI's. That is why she is trying me on the Lexapro. My mood is good, except for the restlessness (I now have the cleanest house on the block!). Any ideas?

Yes, you can gain weight on an ad, even months after
you've started taking it...I'll bet it was the Remeron..since
it's so notorious for that. Maybe you should restart the zoloft
and dump the remeron since you had such a good experience with the zoloft. I think I read in other remeron posts that some
people put on weight months after taking it and not immediately. People
did complain though that it DID take a long time to get rid of the weight though,
it won't just fall off....they had to work really hard at it.

Remeron is the *topper* of weight gain for me. When I was on it the first time I had to shop for new pants twice! But, I KNOW why I gained the weight-I couldn't stay out of the refrigerator. No mysterious metabolic issues. Do you find that Remeron has you "grazing" in the fridge? Can you say unequivocably that Zoloft worked the best for your anxiety than any other med you have taken? It would be a real drag if you ditched your favorite anx. med and it wasn't the one causing the weight gain! Anything can happen with weight issues. I thought Depakote was a problem generally, but only at 500mg or more a day, otherwise I am just seeing about 5 lbs of extra weight at most.

I was thinking today that might be exactly what I need to do. I am also thinking it's the Remeron. My pdoc has thought that all along (gee, she might actually know something! LOL!) I am doing the treadmill every night, watching what I eat, and the weight is not budging one little bit. SOOOOO frustrating!! I usually can lose weight pretty easily if I try.

I know how frustrating it can be...it took me a year
to lose the weight I gained on Lamictal (which would
not BUDGE when I was on it) It was so frustrating! I was
working out intensely, sweating like a maniac for 50 minutes at
a time....nothing....not eating all THAT much....
I am finally back at a normal weight though....(it's funny though, nobody
really notices...I've gone from 133 to 116 in a year, but does anyone
say anything...noooooooo....the good thing about that though is that I guess
they didn't notice the extra weight either!

Hang in there and good luck!!
