May be going to hospital..older meds?..help.please

Posted by jay on December 2, 2002, at 0:40:32

Hey all:

Well, after trying to get my depression and anxiety straight with Effexor XR for the past 5 or so years...well..it just *ain't* working. I am lucky...as I have wonderful supportive parents,,and they *want* me to get better so badly.

Let's put aside any diagnosis. Depression and anxiety are the killers for me. I've tried most of the meds out there...but would like to go back to a class of meds that somehow seemed to work. Those where benzos and tricyclics. Why people and doctors hate these meds so much...I dunno.

I've been thinking along the lines of imipramine, and a nice chunky dose of Xanax. I have friends in Europe who have done wonderful on that combo, yet over here in Canada, the docs just push the SSRI's. My father has done great on doxepin and bromazepam for 8 years.

So, if there is anyone having success on the 'older' meds (ala' tricyclics)...please post.
Thanks a zillion...

Jay

Hi Jay,

The tricyclics drugs are very effective for more severe forms of endogenous depressions. I've been on imipramine for 13 years now. As far as I'm concerned, they work better than the SSRI's. Knowing your father is doing well on this class, you should also do well.

Hi Jay, I don't know how accurate this is but I have been on a little bit of Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) which is supposed to be derived from Tegretol (carbamazepine) which IS a tricyclic compound, and it seems to be helping for bipolar depression symptoms. You might consider that one as a possiblity, esp. if you have some bipolar stuff. I have been on doxepin and various benzos in the past. From what I can recall Lithium+doxepin+flurazepam seemed to do wonders for the sleep/anxiety/agitation issues.--Mitch
