Pfizer has advised that Nardil 15mg tablets (phenelzine sulfate) are to be discontinued when current stocks are exhausted. This is an international discontinuation due to manufacturing difficulties.
Pfizer is attempting to obtain the product from another source, but are unable to guarantee the supply of Nardil beyond the end of June 2002
Pfizer has set up an 800 number which clinicians can ring for help for ongoing management in patients who are currently presrcibed Nardil 800-675-229
I did find this:
Nardil(r) (phenelzine) - August 2002. Pfizer is no longer supplying Nardil tablets. However, Link Pharmaceuticals in Auckland (ph: 09 358 7146, fax: 09 358 7340) advise that they can supply phenelzine tablets pursuant to Section 29 of the Medicines Act 1981. Please note that the phenelzine product from Link Pharmaceuticals is not yet approved by Medsafe, therefore its bioequivalence to Nardil is unknown. If i find anything else, i'll post it.

This sounds like old news.. Rite Aid Pharmacy also told me the same thing a few months ago, I asked my Doc about it and he said at first he thought they were going to stop making Nardil also but that wasn't the case, there was just a shortage on this medicine and the stock would be replenished by the end of 2002. CVS my new pharmacy also just ordered more Nardil and filled my prescription this week. It's hard to know what to believe.. I read in a earlier post
"The pharmacist said it may be a game of politics on Pfizer's part."
It may be true, why one pharmacy tells me they are not going to make the drug anymore and they can't order anymore, and another pharmacy is able to order new stockings without a problem?
I find it hard to believe a drug company could just stop making a drug when probably millions of people are taking it...

This information is from a New Zealand website, I think it also affects Australia but not the US.

I know...but some here get meds via the internet, thought it may be useful...also, I posted it because it was another reference to pfizer no longer supplying Nardil.

>>In Aug 2000, Abbott discontinued Desoxyn Gradumet(R), their brand name slow-release version of their brand name methamphetamine. They blamed "manufacturing difficulties" and it happened with short notice. This was an all-day release formulation that came in two or three different available doses.
They continue to have short-release Desoxyn 5mg, that's it. Unfortunately, people still think Desoxyn was entirely discontinued... on the plus side, once you convince your doc to get you on Desoxyn, you don't also have to convince him into the short-release, which use to be hard to convince since it was seen as more abusable... even though both were abused extensively.

"Manufacturing difficulties" sounds like " not an enormously greedy enough profit margin" to me...
Call me a cynic, but drug companies take on a certain social responsibility when people are dependent on their products and this is outrageous. Nardil is not interchangable with anything else. Call your insurance Co. and discuss the cost to them of your future inpatient stays vs. the cost of Nardil, and I bet they'll make some noise.miss liz

Miss Liz,
For you, in the worst case scenario, Nardil MIGHT be substituted with MAOI Parnate. As for me, this is the kind of horror story (rumor?) I always feared, because the SSRIs have nearly taken over the world; and I'll bet that the SSRI market has something to do with it. If I ever heard that Parnate was discontinued, I'd go into orbit. MAOIs can be livesavers for some people who fail to respond to other ADs.

My pharmacist called Pfizer today and they said that they WERE still making Nardil, but due to manufacturing problems, it wont be available until the first week of December...she even tried calling other pharms in the area, and no one has any, apparently, I am the only one at this pharm that uses Nardil; she orders it specifically for me...so, this leaves me Nardil-less for 2 weeks...any suggestions?
