Switched:Celexa to Lexapro. Can I lose weight now?

Posted by heather66 on November 11, 2002, at 19:41:13

Please help anybody. I gained 25 pounds over the last 12 months - and it is from the Celexa. My pdoc switched me to Lexapro two weeks ago because he said there are less side effects with Lexapro. How do I go about losing the weight now? Think it is possible on Lexapro? I wish the 25 lbs. would just fall off. I hope I do not continue to gain weight. Any comments?

My experience, after being on Lexapro for 6 weeks, has been a significantly decreased appetite and weight loss. I've heard the same thing from several Lexapro users. Have you noticed a decrease in your appetite at all since starting on Lexapro?

Heather,
Doc put me on Lex 7 weeks ago (First time on Anti Depressant) and for a few weeks I could'nt get enough sweets, candy bars, cookies, cake. I never have had a real sweet tooth either. And then, the cravings just went away. I might have gained 2 Lbs but I need to put on a few pounds anyway. I'm a pretty small guy. But the lexapro is working great for me. All side effects are near gone except sexual, but that's getting better too.
Good Luck
Wharf

That is so strange. These meds definitely affect everyone differently. I, too, started on Lexapro 7 weeks ago - first time on ADs also. However, it had the opposite effect on my appetite - I had none! I have lost 8 pounds so far, and although my appetite is improving, it's still nowhere near what it was (I normally have a very "healthy" appetite as I'm training for a half-marathon!)

Re: Switched:Celexa to Lexapro. now I am irritable

My appetite has stayed about the same on Lexapro. I have a bigger problem today than weight gain. I am extremely irritable and crying all day. Everything is making me very angry so I called my doc - who said to go to 40mg of Lexapro rather than return to Celexa. If the 40mg helps (he said wait 10days) then I'll be back to wondering how to lose weight.

Do I need to exercise twice as much as people who are not on meds??????

I've been on lexapro since October 29th. Right away my appetite decreased and I lost a few pounds but my appetite has since gotten back to normal. On November 12th I started on Concerta for ADHD-Innatentive type. As of today I have lost about 10 pounds!

In the 6 months prior to my dysthimia/anxiety and ADHD diagnoses I had gained about that much, probably from mood eating, so I am so glad to lose it!
