Sexual side-effects on Celexa

Posted by Altara on November 8, 2002, at 10:50:04

On celexa I am having sexual side-effects, namely delayed orgasm. I just began celexa not even a week ago and am wondering if anyone who has taken anti'd's knows if this effect lessens over time or gets better.

I was on celexa (20mg's) over a year, and the sexual s/e's never went away.

I've been on Celexa for three months and during that time I have been dead from the waist down. I think I may ask to go on something different, even though it has helped somewhat with anxiety/depression.

it is possible that the side effect might diminish in time over the months of treatment. This has been found to be the case among some patients. Most likely, though, you will probably have to live with it. If it is just a matter of delayed orgasm, then this is probably something you're going to have communicate with your partner. However, if orgasm is fairly unattainable (anorgasmia), you might want to talk to your therapist about some strategies to decrease the side effects. For instance, some people in consistent relationships take 1-2 day drug holidays per week so that they are able to perform better. Other people just lower the dose. This may or may not work for you. Another strategy: consider augmenting with another med 1-2 hours before coitus. Ones that have been found to be the most beneficial are Buspar, the stimluants (e.g., dexedrine, methylphenidate), antihistamines (periactin), yohimbine, and wellbutrin. One of these will definitely work for you and will increase your libido as well. Just because you're taking an antidepressant now doesn't mean you're castrated.

good luck.

Thanks for the replies!

Well... I've been on celexa for about 4 months now.. and am experiencing some lessening of the sexual side effects.. I even got turned on yesterday!!! *l*

OK, my "way" for over coming this is embarrasing!!! I practiced every day with my little mean machine!! *lol* Every morning I tried weith it and now, after about 6 weeks, my orgasms are coming back, and in a decent amount fo time. They're still ALOT weaker than before celexa though!!!

Good luck!!

Hi , Nikkis experience sounds similar to mine, maybe its the english air!
After about 4 months of no desire or orgasm I have just recently felt an inkling of desire and a successful manual release so to speak.
My doc says this side effect wears off for some and not for others, but it takes 3-6 months to find out sadly.
Cipramil is his favourite med and he uses it a lot
so it may be worth hanging in there a bit longer.

HI. My doctor gave me Pindolol for sexual side effects of Celexa and it really works. He said it won't help with desire but it will help with response. I take 2 tabs a day. He said to experiment with 1 to 5 a day. He said that it blocks the sexual response effect of Celexa in the brain that contols that type of thing. No side effects from the pindolol except that my blood pressure is lower which is a good thing. Good luck.

yup celexa by far is the most sexual impedimenting anti depressant i tried. it made me feel like a neuter being. however, it was one of the few meds that worked very well for depression. but i had to stop cuz i just wasnt feeling like a "man" anymore.

Every SSRI that I took; Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, Wellbutrin, effected me sexually, including Celexa. Usually the effect's either delayed ejaculation, or failed ejaculation. It very rarely altered my abbilty to get, or sustain an errection. Sometimes the combination of SSRI's, and alcohol can make these reaction's more severe.
I have not used any SSRI for nearly a year, and I am happy to say that, downstair's everything is back to normal. My doctor explained to me that these medication's can actually, 'temporarily, chemically castrate you', for the time-being. He added, "a fair trade for feeling better".
