my mom works at a doctors office and they have tons and tons of medication samples (thats how i get all my Serzone samples :) ) but i want to try something else for my anxiety. What is depakote used for?? Anxiety? Panic Attacks? Are there alot of Side Effects??

Its a mood stabilizer for people with bipolar disorder. I dont think its used for anxiety. Do you have a doctor that you are seeing? If not I would recommend it. they can tell you what would work best.

as sienna said, it is the gold standard for mood stabilization in bipolar disorder (an AED- anti-epilepsy drug). it has lots of side-effects, and while some pdocs use it in treatment resistant panic patients, it really isn't worth it. the proper treatment for panic (i'm taking this from your posting name) is the benzo class of medications. ADs, particularly ssris, often make symptoms worse. take care, judy

Hi there Panic_attack
I have anxiety and panic attacks too and I have been taking a benzo for many many years. It works sometimes and sometimes not. My doc gave me depakote as a treatment for my panic and it worked great. It is classed as an anticonvulsant....just like klonopin is....and it has had great success on very agitated panic-plagued people. It had only one side effect for me and that was weight gain. I only needed 250 mgs a day along with 0.5mgs of klonopin to control my recurrent panic attacks. YOu may need more but I just wanted you to know that it worked quite well on my panic so you might want to give it a try. Of course, your mileage may vary.
