How long is PROZAC life?

Posted by JGm on October 27, 2002, at 17:39:37

Hi,
I am going out of 2 monts of prozac at 40 mg/d, cause i had lot of heavy side effects like dizzyness, headache, heavy eyes....
I've stopped exactly one week ago, but the side effects still remain the same.
It's is possible that prozac has a so long blood-life?
I remember that on Effexor and Paxil, the side-effects desappeared within two/tree days after the stop!
How long does Prozac actively lives in our body?
Any experience about this?
Thanks for your share!

Two full weeks and it will be out of your system. I did not have side effects after quitting taking Prozac after a year. I lowered the dose a few days and then stopped. It's so much better than Paxil withdrawl; yikes the thought gives me brain zaps! You'll be fine soon.

I have read that it can still be detected in the blood up to 2 months after stopping it.

There's an active metabolite called norfluoxetine that stays in your body longer than the fluoxetine (Prozac) itself, but I don't remember how long.

Norfluoxetine has a half-life of 4-16 days according to Dr. Bob's psychopharmacology tips. "Washouts" of meds are generally considered to span approximately 5(X) half-lives of the drug in question. In this case the worst-case washout period for norfluoxetine would be 80 days.
