I am so confused about the issue of hormones and depression. I am 56 and have been dx depression and now bipolar. I havc been on all the psych drugs and still feel lousey and can barely work. recently I saw a well known gyn-endocronoligist and he states that most symptoms 0f low libido and low estrogen are due to the need for supplemental estrogen and tesrogen. Certainly, his checklist of low estrogen fits me to a "T". Are there any doctors or others out there who can speak to this issue. I am so tired of being a guinea pig and not feeling well

If you go to http://www.pcrm.org/ and click on the banner "Stopping HRT? Here's How" you'll be guided with informative assistance.

Oh, so um, well, everyone's stopping it, so I assumed you were as well.
Considering the health risks associated with taking horse urine everyday (also called "Premarin" and "Prempro") HRT is widely critized among the med community now.
Horse urine is definitely not going to help your libido, there's absolutely no science in that. As far as horse urine therapy goes, it's advised that replacing it with walking 25 minutes a day is going to get the same effect.
So I really don't see the need in HRT. Exercise would certainly have more science backing in than horse urine does.

Hi..from what I've read, it is still considered pretty safe to take two years of HRT to ease the transition into menopause, unless you have specific elevated risk factors. The symptoms which can be helped do include depression and lowered libido, in addition to hot flashes, etc. If you look up "depression" and "estrogen" on one of the search engines like Medline, you'll find some associations, with estrogen definitely having an antidepressant action for some women.
Some gynecologists, such as mine, prefer using Ogen, a plant-derived estrogen related to soy, rather than Premarin, along with Provera. Also, they sometimes give it on an every-other-day basis.I hope this is helpful to you.

have you read any books by John Lee on natural progesterone, and on the menopause. He says that to get accurate levels of oestrogen and progesterone that salivary samples should be sent off and hormone therapy can be based on that(aaddresses are in his books).he is a great proponent of natural progesterone, and uses oestrogen cautiously.its worth looking at his books.

>Good for your doc!
I wish more did this. Those poor horses shouldn't suffer so badly... sigh.

Just kidding, but I agree with you; I have always admired my ob-gyn, as he has used only plant-based estrogens for the last 25 years- long before most people were even thinking that the source could make a difference.
