I'm just cursed with mental illness

Posted by borderliner21 on October 13, 2002, at 19:04:53

I am tryin to find a combo of medications with no sexual dysfuntion. I suffer from chronic depression, anxiety, social phobia, ptsd, multiple personality disorder and more. I am taking remeron which is helping my depreession but doing nothing for social phobia. What other medications should I be taking? My pdoc will probably prescribe anything.

I thought I posted a response on this, but maybe I forgot to hit the Confirm button.

If you suffer from multiple personality disorder, the best thing would probably be to try an antipsychotic. They also generally correct depressive symptoms, including anxiety. You could ask about Geodon, Seroquel, or Zyprexa. I had more success on the Geodon, I think it's a little more powerful. The Seroquel is pretty sedating and it seemed to affect my sex drive after taking it, but I never experienced much sexual side effects from the others. Though I was on Effexor at the time, which decreased my sex drive, so it was a little difficult to tell. I think I remember feeling so good on the Geodon that I didn't really care about my sex drive, but it was definitely there. Zyprexa didn't seem to affect it either. In any case, they are all pretty widely used and I know many people on this board have had good success with them. Are you seeing a psychaitrist?

Unfortunately, many ADs produce sexual side effects. The TCAs generally cause fewer and less severe, but some find the other side effects of TCAs (dry mouth, somnolence, constipation, postural hypotension) intolerable. The AD best known for low sexual side effects is wellbutrin. It's activating and can cause more jitteriness and anxiety. If you go the wellbutrin route make sure you have some flavor of benzo to deal with the anxiety (even if you don't go the wellbutrin route).

If I was your psychiatrist (I'm a doctor but of philosophy) I'd start you on Wellbutrin XR 150mg in the morning and Xanax prn up to 2 mg. I'd then move you as quickly as you could tolerate to Wellbutrin XR 150mg b.i.d. and adjust the Xanax level.

So, there are many options for you. Something will work for you. You just have to have patience.

Feel Better,

Britt
