Cyclothymia

Posted by SueT on October 6, 2002, at 20:54:39

HI, I am new to all of this. I have been diagnosed with Dysthymia and have tried several AD (Prozac, Zoloft, Wellbutrin). I am now on Effexor. The SSRI's seemed to work well in the beginning, then I became irritable and/or depressed again (plus the weight gain). The Wellbutrin made me VERY aggitated. The Effexor doesn't seem to do much.
I am wondering if maybe I am Cyclothymic. I become very easily frustrated and overwhelmed, and quite irritable. I alternate between wanting to, say, clean the entire house, to feeling overwhelmed by having to make the bed.
I would love to get feedback from anyone with this diagnosis becuase it does not seem like there is a lot of information out there.

it is not uncommon for antidepressants to cause hypomania, which would be the highs in the cyclomania. as far as i can tell, drs won't diagnose you as being hypomanic at times, and therefore cyclothymic if it is the med that is causing it. you can still benefit from a mood stabilizer like Neurontin or Gabitril to even out your moods if they are a problem.

Hi Sue.

This was the same type of symptoms I had. You most likely have cyclothemia. Wellbutrin did the same to me too. I have been on Lamictal since spring. This drug has done wonders for me. I am stable and feeling NORMAL for once in my life. Go to www.psycom.net/depression.central.html
Scroll down the page to cyclothymia. Excellent info to educate youself with this illness. The page on "a discussion", will have many post on this subject. Mine included. You can also do a search on this subject here on psycho-babble.

Laura,

Just curious, what dosage of Lamictal have you been on. I have been on 150 for about 4 weeks, tried to go to 200 but felt really irritable and annoyed at everything people did.. thanks

Mark,

You might need to back off and go up 25mg. at a time. This drug has a narrow therapeutic window and that's why you must titrate slowly. You can pass that window if you jump the dose up too much too soon. I take 100mg/day. I probably will need to go up because I've been reducing my antidepressant as I increase the Lamictal. Doing this slowly too.

Laura.
