In the UK anyone has a legal right to read their medical / psychiatric notes since approximately 1991. Is there no equivelant right under the freedom of information legislation in the USA?
I wish you luck.

But if that happens then they'll have to stop doodling on their sketchpad! Some patients just want to ruin all of a doctor's fun : )

Hi McPac,
I live in Cincinnati and yes you can have a "copy" of your Dr's records. You can't have the actual records to take home (Dr. is required by law to hold original records) but you have a legal right to copies. They may charge you a small copy fee. I have done this in the past, only when leaving a pdoc - they will argue with you in favor of forwarding the records to your next pdoc so you don't get to see them. I have also received only partial records after making the request. A little note from your lawyer usually clears that up.
Good luck

My pdoc would let me see my records as long as he was there to help in case of confusion (for my own protection.)

Do Dr's have a way of getting a patient's past records from other doctors EVEN when you don't tell your current dr. the names of your previous dr's?
I want a totally UNBIASED opinion...NOT just one doctor, in many cases, passing on his crap to another. If you had a terrible Dr., why would you want his incorrect and erroneous 'spew' being given to your next Dr.??? I certainly don't! Is there some way that they can access prior dr's records?

Geezer..."I have also received only partial records after making the request. A little note from your lawyer usually clears that up."
>>>>>>>>>>Oh, I'm sure they take out whatever they want to...what's to stop them from throwing away some records before they hand them over? Nothing.

Access to records is an important issue, but this board focuses on medication, so I'd like this thread to be redirected to Psycho-Social-Babble, thanks.

PS: And follow-ups regarding posting policies to be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration.
