Anybody, Please Re: Lamictal

Posted by McPac on September 25, 2002, at 13:03:40

I already know that Lamictal has strong anti-depressant properties.
My question is: Does Lamictal increase serotonin levels (like an ssri would?)
I know it's an anti-convulsant, but I need to know if it increases serotonin levels?
Thanks so much to anybody who responds!

Yes, weak inhibitory effect on 5HT3 + weak uptake inhibtion (to a lesser degree) of dopamine and NE reuptake inhibition. Its sodium channel blockade does not mediate this effect.

In the end though, who cares how it works? As long as it does, right.

For future reference, the full prescribing information will have these details under the pharmacokinetics section. Also you might want to do your own searches on PubMed. You will start to know a lot more in detail about how your meds work.

>>>>>>>>Actually, in some cases (like mine), I care very much how it works....I need an anti-ocd as well as an anti-depressant medication....I currently use Zoloft to meet both of those needs....but the Zoloft comes with some very negative side effects....I knew Lamictal had significant anti-dep. properties, which is great....but, for me, I needed to know if it had significant serotonin-increasing capabilities (the best meds for ocd are the ssri's).....if it does, then it could possibly have efficacy in ocd.....thanks
