Benzodiazepine Tolerance

Posted by Jim Bob on September 14, 2002, at 23:00:23

Hey everyone,

I'm sure this has been discussed many times before, but could someone give me a brief low-down on benzo. tolerance?? For example, in someone who has abused benzos. at high doses in the past, how long does a tolerance to benzos. last? Is there cross-tolerance between benzos.? I once tried to suicide by overdosing on valium, and took around 200 mg. On and off I'd taken 20-30mg/day for anxiety relief prescribed by a different pdoc. About a week ago I was on klonopin and was taking around 3mg per day. Now I've been prescribed valium 5 mg. 1 or 2 times daily, and I'm really not feeling any effect. What should I do??? Help!

Oh dear you are in a state.

Are you still taking the PROZAC?

I would take three 5mg valium a day if you need it, no more.

If none of this works I would switch to PAXIL if I were you. Although that is what I called "A stupid Britsh drug." It is good for anxiety. It hell to wean off at the end though.

I found that 10mg of the valium is effective for the anxiety. I'm no longer on the prozac. My current meds are simply Ritalin LA 20mg/day and Valium 5-10mg/day as needed. The funny thing is, the time when I get the most anxious is in the evening (it's been this way since before I was on Ritalin). It's more of an anxious depression, and it's hard to tell which came first, the chicken or the egg (anxiety or depression). Is it wrong to be taking valium for this?? 10mg really cuts through the anxiety, and leaves me feeling less depressed as well.

Much of depression is caused by living with anxiety...at least that is how I feel and have heard it described by many.

If the valium is used to decrease anxiety which in turn helps you sleep, then yes, it is being used properly.

If the valium was used purely as a sleep aid without the symptoms of anxiety then it would by nature, lose it's sedative effect (as is usual and desireable after a short period for all of the bzds) and one would want to increase the dose to regain the sedative effect.

This is where the results of misprescribing can be misinterpreted as a continuous escallation of the dosage for no apparent reason. Many are confused about the proper usage of these medications - that's why there's so much misinformation out there amongst patients and doctors alike.
