Hi:
My mother is being treated with mood regulators such as: depamine and lithium which does not seem to be efficient. Tegretol is one that is stronger, however, since my mother got a heart surgery two years ago (valv aorta): she is not allowed to take Tegretol.
Her blood pressure varies dramatically with her mood swings.
Would you know of any other mood regulators, we could talk to our doctor about (France is very poor in terms of mood regulators)?Thank you for your time.
Anne

Anne,I am not sure what the brand name is in France, but valproic acid (an anticonvulsant), might be helpful to control mania in the presence of heart disease without causing adverse effects related to heart function. Tegretol is structurally related to tricyclic antidepressants. That is why it should be avoided in patients with heart disease.
I hope this helps you,
Mitch
