Stiff neck, rigidity, EPS???

Posted by JonW on August 28, 2002, at 15:50:57

Hi all,

I posted a message a few weeks ago about a stiff neck when I was comming off of Nardil and it still has not gone away. I also have muscle rigidity that is noticeable when doing a situp or pushup for example.

Anyway, I was previously on a low dose of Risperdal while on Nardil and wonder if this isn't an EPS from the Risperdal. If so, how long does it take to go away? I don't know anything about EPS or if that's what I'm even experiencing, but any input is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

Jon,

The last time I experienced EPS was with Risperdal. It took a few weeks to completely fade after I stopped it. You have mentioned taking Geodon as well. Other posters have complained about EPS associated with Geodon. I get milder dystonia from SSRI's as well. I am taking a low-dose of Effexor now and it "gets" me in my upper back-neck muscles (it is very mild though-and I dont' mind it). Celexa and Prozac "gets" me in my throat (lump in throat-muscles very tight). Also, withdrawing from the Nardil may have precipitated part of it. You have got a reduction of DA circulating around and it could be affecting your motor circuits. Have you considered selegiline?

Re: EPS - The A/P makes you drug sensivitive

Before A/P's there was virtually no drug induced tardive eps (any effect lingering > 1 month including simple non a/p drug sensitivity).

If you never had eps prior to an a/p - but did after - almost for sure the a/p caused your eps and continuing problems with med sensitivity. For example normally people will not react to SSRI or MAOI's with dystonia - unless they have sustained a brain lesion from an a/p previously.

Polypharmacy with an a/p can change the risks involved - usually increasing risks...

Continued use of A/p's can make the problem worse and/or more chronic.

Mitch,

What you describe sounds very similar to what I am experiencing. I would describe it as mild but rather annoying. I can't sit for very long times, etc. I have tried stopping the Geodon but only briefly and went back on it. Currently, I am giving it another go without it for a bit longer to see if this goes away. I recently started moclobemide so maybe this will at least do something similar to the selegiline idea.

Thanks again,
Jon
