Is there any A.P.'s that don't cause blunting

Posted by lawrence s. on August 29, 2002, at 1:10:55

I have tryed a few of the AP's for OCD and ruminating thoughts, but don't feel that I have made any improvement in my health. The side effects (cognitive blunting), to me are worse than the illness.

I can relate to this. My opinion from my own experience has been Geodon to be the best in this regard followed by Risperdal. The worst for me was Zyprexa. But that's just my case.

I have never taken AP's but it seems to me that
some blunting is to be expected in all AP's. that this is an effect rather than a side effect. Key is finding one the controls your OCD while causes
the least blunting.

Dear Lawrence,

Sorry to answer your question a big NO. I have been diagnosed more than ten years ago with depression, and at least tried ten different antidepressants. I am still on an antidep. All those ADs caused some emotional blunting that doesn't go away with the continuation of therapy. Actually I think they work in this way. Blunting your emotions and making you forget your worries. If you have obsessive worries and put on an AD only for that reason, there is definitely a subsitution for obsessive worries. Try klonopin. It is an excellent medication for obsessive worries and I guarantee the results without much emotional blunting that ADs do. Ask your doc.

What you refer to as 'emotional blunting' is what helped me on Paxil. I cared too much about everything before taking Paxil, and could not 'go with the flow'. On Paxil, nothing bothered me [blunting?] and that was great for me. It really helped me a lot when I had to work full time and be "on" all day.

have any of you tried remeron or serzone?

i wonder how that they would do...

... i am trying to find a drug that will get rid of too much thinking type stimulation but not the reward that comes from doing fun activities ...

... it seems like there are two dimensions to depression...
1. making things fun/enjoyable
2. feeling calm, peaceful, relaxed.. getting rid of worries, agitation

i'm hoping once 1 and 2 are stable, anxiety will be gone as well

I think Joy makes a good point about defining what "blunting" is to you. I am unipolar depressed, not OCD, so I can only speak from that perspective (hmmm, maybe I am pre-blunted).

I was on the anti-psychotic Risperdal and it gave me energy which helped my thoughts be not so lethargic, also. I didn't feel so much "flat affect" while on it.

I got off because of side effects, and it was very disappointing to let it go.
