Remeron - time until effectiveness?

Posted by wcfrench on August 5, 2002, at 21:04:06

Can anyone share their experience on Remeron with regard to how long it took to achieve anti-depressant effects? I have been on it about six days now, and though it's a very short time, I have felt absolutely NOTHING. Usually when starting an AD I feel at least something within the first week or so. I am hoping it will get better, and that this is just a delay in the onset of the anti-depressant effects. I really hope so, because I'm tired of trying new things, which I am sure we can all relate to. Any words of encouragement would help. Thanks so much.

From what I have read, from what my pdoc tells me and from my own experiences, it can take 6-8 weeks or more before the true effects of an antidepressant are felt.

I noticed a relief of anxiety initially at 15 mg during the first two weeks I was on Rem but didn't notice it helped my depression any. The anxiety returned after two weeks, upped the dose to 30 mg, noticed the depression lifting about the 8th week, then I thought it was pooping out on me, I had totally slipped back to the state I was in before starting Rem. I decided to wait it out and not do another increase. About 10 weeks was when I noticed a significant difference and it's been great ever since. It's been 8 mos now. Hope this helps.

I have been on Remeron 30 mgs. for a year now. Like you, I usually feel an effect within a couple of days of started an SSRI. Remeron was different though, I didn't feel any change until a month had gone by. But then it worked wonderfully. It pulled me out of the worst depression I have had. The doctor did tell me that Remeron would take a month to work, and he was right. I didn't get the horrible side effects from it that I have gotten with the other meds, which was great. I hope it works out for you, hang in there.

Thanks everyone for your great words of encouragement. It's just scary when you start a new med and you don't feel anything because I get the scary feeling like I might be immune to it or something. I'm taking it with Lithium after not achieving full success with anti-depressants and then anti-psychotics. I'm glad there are people here that can relate.. Look forward to the positive effects and low side effects!
Thx

I had a very very good response to Remeron and lithium. Unfortunately, I had side fx with lithium that were not tolerable longterm and my pdoc took me off.

I hope the combo works well for you.
