Hi,
I decided to give valerian root a try to help sleep.
When should I take it? One hour before bed, or earlier?
It smells real bad by the way...cem

More like 2 hours before bed. It takes a little while to get through your system. If you find you get sleepier before the two hours, you'll know for next time. By the way, valerian root has the opposite effect in about 10% of the population, making them feel jittery rather than sleepy (I'm one of those 10%). It'll feel like the caffeine jitters that some get from too much coffee.
If it does work for you, it's not good to rely on it continuously unless you're desperate & can't sleep otherwise.
As for that dirty socks smell, did you know that it drives cats wild, much like catnip does? I had valerian growing in my garden & the ground was worn smooth there in fall & early spring before the plants grew tall. All the neighbourhood cats would come & roll about on the partially exposed roots. It wasn't till the plant was bushy in the summer that they left it alone.
So if valerian gives you the jitters, you can always use the pills to make someone's cats happy.

My friend took it for insomnia (before bedtime)
but found it very weak in effect and giving
a strange sleep. His doctor did not seen to think
much of it. He found camomile tea slightly
soothing.Squiggles
