On Prozac (Fluoxetine) +6 years and counting ...

Posted by bordendazed on July 8, 2002, at 17:33:11

20mg in mornings. It still seems to still have the anger management and better-tolerance-for-people effect that it was proscribed for originally, but is there anything better these days?

Is there anything more dynamic or dramatic available these days. (No I am not talking amphetamines or opium, but SSRI's...)

How about going to 40 or 60mg, or Prozac Weekly?

I recently went to generic version and noticed "something different" but nothing I can specify.

Thanks

No.

Find a hobby instead. Playing the psych med game unless you really really need to does more harm than good. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Just my humble opinion.

I agree if it's not broke dont fix it.

Also, many people I know that switched to the generac version of Prozac have said it did not work as well, and eithor switched back to Prozac or had to take a higher generac mg.

That would be an option to increase your dose if 20 mg does not seem to be enough. The only newer SSRI that I am aware of is a more purified Celexa (called Lexapro in the US) which should hit the US market in early September.

Usually I agree, but maybe as a child of the 60's I still have faith in modern medicine and better living through chemistry. FYI, I did inhale in high school, and am familiar with many substances, but don't consider myself an abuser, for example, for a few years it's just been 3-5 Darvocets a week for my neck pain, and beer and coffee.

I am just wondering if there are any beter or different non-debilitating medications.

What about just switching to a different currently available SSRI?

Any feedback on Prozac Weekly?

Thanks.

Hi bordendazed,

If you have had 6 years of success with Prozac I would stick with it. It is without a doubt the best AD I ever took. Thought I had poop out after 1 year and was DXed Bipolar II. I was taken off ADs and started on Depakote and Lamictal - that was a year ago and still don't have the depression under controll. People talk about "emotional blunting" from ADs - I would give anything to have a little of that.

In my opinion 3-5 Darvocets per week, a few beers, and coffee is nothing. I used to take Darvocet for hangovers.

Like you I was a child of the 60s but unlike you I abused some things heavily. Know all to well about "better living through chemistry". The only thing that saved me was my youth.

I did take Prozac weekly for a time. Dosing by pdocs instruction was one cap every 5 days. I could never see the benefit because I never had a problem remembering to take my morning dose of regular Prozac. I found it more difficult to remember the 5 day interval than the dailey one. I also think this was an attempt by Lilley to extend and protect their patent.

I am about to restart Prozac and hope it will bring relief. No generics this time, only the brand name.

I wish you well,

Geezer

Are you taking it very regularly every day and every month?

I took Prozac for 9 years but went on and off of it a couple times each year. By about year 6 I started noticing anxiety, and that it didn't seem to be working anymore (I didn't know about the "poop-out" effect). When I determined that my anxiety was worse on the Prozac than off of it I gave it up. I do have to admit though it was the best AD I have taken... I found that Celexa created a similar feeling to Prozac, Zoloft pissed me off, and Paxil was a whole different animal.

If you are "pooping-out" on Prozac you might try something else, but if it is working ok...then maybe you should leave it alone.

Good luck!
Mom
