Anybody find Tegretol to be of use?

Posted by jay on June 28, 2002, at 2:16:18

It doesn't seem no matter how high a dose I have been on Tegretol, it was like taking a sugar pill. (And yes I had my blood levels monitored.)
I just found an old bottle of the stuff in my medicine cabinet. I threw it out, as that was probably the last med to ever do any good for me.
Others...same experience? (Seems so from some of the negative posts on it.)

Hey Jay,
Don't know what you were on it for. I'm bipolar and had a few manic episodes when I was a teenager (32 now). As soon as I started the Teg, the mania was (poof!)gone. Been on it since then and it's almost like I have uni-polar depression because I haven't gotten manic since. Hard to say about side effects because I've been on it for so long...word retrieval probs and some fatigue probably. Oh yeah, I'm on 1000 mg.

One of my many Pdocs switched me from Depakote (which seemed to wash through my system like water!) to Tegretol to stabilize my mood. That was in the days when I was dx'ed as Bipolar II (there have been other dx's: atypical depression, major depression, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia, etc., etc.....). Tegretol made me very sluggish and I was really frightened by the cognitive problems like the "word retrieval" difficulties...I also experienced some weight gain (5-10lbs), but I seem to gain weight on just about everything! BTW,I was on 600mg/day.

I also know an older man (about 65) who was on 1600mg of Tegretol for trigeminal neuralgia (sp?) and he basically became almost non-functional... shuffling as he walked, short-term memory probs, slurring speech and so on. Unlike me, he lost weight he couldn't afford to lose and looked emaciated... After he was gradually taken off Tegretol he returned to his normal weight and functioning level in a 2-3 days.

Can't say that I'm a fan of Tegretol!

Best of luck,
suji :-)

Some 5 years ago I suggeested to one woman that she should add tegretol to her lithium for BP.She was spending several months in hospital every year with intractable depression. She has been well since.I have seen one other good result too in a man.It is worth trying then but lithium is still the main mood stabiliser in BP.

Information on Trileptal?

I'm curious about trileptal. Is it available in US? Why isn't it prescribed instead of Tegretal? I understand that it is the same but has a much better side-effect profile. Have people found it to be helpful for depression as part of a cocktail?

Any info would be most appreciated.

likewise

Is it available in US?
not sure,probably yes

Why isn't it prescribed instead of Tegretal?
very expensive ($220 p/m in AUstralia), and only covered if prescribed for epileptic purpose (not bipolar)

I understand that it is the same but has a much better side-effect profile.
Yes, basically the same just 1 oxygen molecule added to make it more permeable for absorbtion with higher potency. Supposedly interacts better with other drugs.

Have people found it to be helpful for depression as part of a cocktail?
looking into that very much myself, i'm curious as to its moclobemide interraction, also modafinil, and effexor, mirtazapine.
