I'm scared to mix anything with Wellbutrin!

Posted by Nina2002 on June 23, 2002, at 23:26:29

This is strange, I've never visited a message board, let alone "started a new thread," but here I am, desperate for any and all advice. I was taking 300MG of Wellbutrin daily, plus 50 MG of Seroquel at night, and 7.5 MG of Tranxene "as needed." Two months ago, I lost my appetite altogether, and lost 10 lbs in a three-week time period. Turns out the Wellbutrin was to blame, so we tried a daily dose of 225 MG. It didn't take long before my depression was back with a vengeance: crying at work, "nobody likes me," “I’m tired of living,” the whole nine yards. So then my psychiatrist supplements my 225 MG of Wellbutrin with 25MG of Pamelor (Notriptylin), and I narrowly avoid a f***ing seizure! I'm hopelessly depressed, yet terrified of trying anything new. Is there somebody out there with a similar experience, who might be willing and able to tell me about a drug that would supplement my current dosage of Wellbutrin without terrifying side-effects??? For anyone that responds, I can't thank you enough!!!

Hello Nina,

I don't know if you have ever tried an ssri, but I have used Paxil and Zoloft (not at the same time of course) with Wellbutrin SR. For what it's worth, I was taking 450mg of Wellbutrin with either drug with no ill effects. This combo was pretty good at managing my depression.

Wellbutrin is the only anti-depressant that ever did me any good, so I don't want to quit it to try something new. Fortunately, there are lots of things that can be combined with it, like SSRI's and mood stabilizers (anti-psychotics and anti-convulsants).

I have combined Wellbutrin (200 mg/day) with Cytomel (a thyroid drug), Methylphenidate (Ritalin), and Risperdal (an anti-psychotic) to treat my depression. The Cytomel helped a little, as did the Ritalin. It's too soon to tell about the Risperdal. YMMV, of course.

Good luck!

Schuyler

hi. i'm so sorry to hear about your struggle. i have lost my appetite long ago, but i've just gotten into a routine of eating anyway and drinking anyway. you might need to just will yourself to do it if you don't want to lose anymore weight. but if the wellbutrin otherwise seems to be handling your depression well, i don't see why messing with a good thing. there are lots of mixes that people take with it, like SSRI's for example, serzone, ativan/xanax/etc. type of meds, and others. i hope you find a good mix for you.

I have taken WB with Remeron, Remeron and Neurontin, Neurontin, Celexa, Zoloft, Serzone. No problems with any combos, nor with adding Ativan for anxiety when needed. I have found WB most helpful and have taken it for about 3 years. Currently take 300mg WB, 150mg Serzone, and 50mg Zoloft daily.

Good luck.
