due to insurance coverage, getting meds thru mail

Posted by krazy kat on June 22, 2002, at 9:40:55

my insurance company now will only cover my meds if the script is sent to them and it is filled by their mail order service. i can call in refills but those also have to be sent to me.

how does one handle this? my depakote can only be filled a few days before i run out now, and the ritalin is even more controlled. how does one make certain that they don't run out of a med and follow protocol? i don't see how this is possible.

thanks!

Maybe you should get your pdoc to write one script for twice as much of each. That way you'd always have an extra bottle of each to tide you over if you ever needed it. Just a suggestion...

Yeah, probably not... I hope the NY Times doesn't find out, I could lose my job! :-)

Have you asked your pdoc what to do? Maybe he's delt with this before? If money's a problem maybe you could save some up and set it aside for paying for filling both prescriptions w/o insurance at a local pharmacy in the event of an emergency. In an emergency he could prescribe 250mg generic valproic acid when it is time to refill instead of depakote which only costs like $15 for 90 capsules verses like $75 for 250mg capsules of depakote -- generic valproic acid only comes in 250mg capsules. I think generic ritalin is pretty cheap, too. Anyway, just some more ideas that popped out of my head... I have to get that fixed one of these days -- my head, that is :)

Good Luck,
Jon

Oh wait, I misunderstood your last post... I thought you were saying *I* was the ethicist at the NY Times and a good one, but you meant it was a good *question* and you were being serious... the ">> JonW" at the end of the subject confused me, ooops! Now life makes a lot more sense and I don't have to think that krazy kat shouldn't quit her dayjob! :-)

krazy kat doesn't have a dayjob right now...
