Went to conference in LA on....

Posted by judy1 on June 17, 2002, at 0:51:42

"Non-Pharmaceutical Approaches to mental Disorders" and it was absolutely fascinating. A lot of information on herbs and nutritional remedies- presented by some well-respected psychiatrists. B complex vitamins, folic acid, magnesium deficiency causing anxiety, depression, allergies; zinc healing bulimia (UCLA professor of Psychiatry), EFA's (Omega-3's for bipolar) and on and on. Lots to process- but 2 things stuck in my brain- the U.S. uses 90% of the world's ritalin supply and 48% of psychiatrists take psychotropic meds. This isn't an anti-med post, I take meds- meds have saved my life and ruined it at times- I just think there should be some type of med and natural remedy coexistance- they really do compliment each other. And if I can cut down the side effects by reducing the dose of a psychotropic med and adding vitamons or minerals or herbs, I guess I just see positive outcomes. I'll try to answer anything I can- dose, etc. but this was a very intense 2 days. Take care, judy

Sounds interesting. Did a psychiatrist named Priscilla Slagle by any chance speak? One of the reasons I started taking 5-HTP is because she recommended it on her web site (she also sells it on the site but I didn't buy mine from her). I believe she's in L.A.

No she didn't- Drs. Charles Gant, Stuart Shipko, Hyla Cass, Cynthia Watson (all psychiatrists), Prof. James Croxton, Jeff Baker, N.D.- does lab testing for EVERYTHING at Great Smokies Diagnostic Lab, and Dan Stradford, president of Safe Harbor. 5-HTP was spoken about a great deal- how is it working for you?- judy

My above post pretty much sums it up (worried about rash at the moment). Too tired to post more now but if I think of anything else I noticed about 5 HTP effects I'll post tomorrow.

Just a quick warning....

I take Omega 3's and one of the points that came up at the seminar was to be careful about the source you receive your supplements from- apparently there is a LOT of mercury in fish all over the country and sites (on Google) that monitor them. Take care, Judy

Hi Judy,

Can you please relay any details of the major supplements to treat depression and anxiety and the major scientifically backed up findings?

im esp interested in magnesium, fish oil, 5-htp... but please add any others that seem to do well.

Cheers!

Judy, sounds interesting. The psychiatrist I go to now does prescribe supplements in addition to the meds. He prescribed chromium and folic acid for me. I started the fish oil myself, but I've been happy with how he is working with me to lower the effexor dose once the benefits of fish oil kicked in. Also, when I ask him questions about a certain supplement, he will go do some lit research and share it with me.

BTW, who sponsored the conference?
