Wellbutrin and weight loss

Posted by paxvox on June 12, 2002, at 16:39:58

OK, I know I have broached this subject before, but has anyone else who takes Wellbutrin had *excessive* weight loss? I have loss 40 lbs. since July 2000. However, I changed my dietary intake rather dramatically by stopping drinking alcohol. I eat a rather "Spartan" diet, as I always have, probably no more than 2000-2500 calories. So, these do mitigate the circumstances. Anyone else?

i lost all that my body could i think and have stayed basically there. dropping the alcohol could really increase the weight loss... it's very fattening.

>I recently discontinued my remeron, wellbutrin combination and went back totally on wellbutrin SR, 150 mg. twice a day and almost immediately my tummy flattened out and I lost a couple of pounds. This medication acts like a bit of an anorexic to me, ie. it inhibits appetite. In spite of 'not necessarily being hungry enough to do it', I still will eat three nutritious meals a day. Some of the more recent research on wellbutrin says it may induce weight loss even if the diet isn't that low in calories. I certainly found that. I could eat 1500 calories on remeron and gain weight and eat the same amount on Wellbutrin and lose weight. So it's a great med for those of us who are getting a little thick around the middle and maybe not so great for thos who actually need to gain weight. I wouldn't be surprised, in the not so long distance future if it may not be considered a weight loss drug, ideal for those who also have adult ADD and depression. Take care everybody.
