Focalin and Rosavin -- what the heck is Rosavin

Psychobabble Post – what the heck is Rosavin?
I just got a scrip today for Focalin and was told to also think about combining it with Rosavin, by my pdoc of course. I was under the impression that Focalin was some kind of herbal remedy/alternative type thing. I don’t mean to malign alternative medicine and that stuff, but the pdoc said that it wasn’t, but Rosavin is. Has anyone tried any of the former meds? Thanks…

Rosavin -- take with a grain of salt... » James

First time I've heard of it. My knowledge of herbal remedies is pretty good (though I don't subscribe to much of what's claimed) but I'd never heard of this one before.

Every time a new herb is 'discovered' by Western society or New Agers, it becomes the latest cure-all, so what this following link claims it can help, take with a grain of salt (or a whole bag, if needed). After all, it is a commercial site selling the product.

Folacin is another term for folic acid, one of the vitamins of the B complex. It's vitally important as a co-enzyme in making proteins & neurotransmitters, among other uses of it. It's the vitamin that you may have heard recommended for pregnant women to prevent the baby developing spinal bifada.

Focalin is a new refined form of Ritalin » James

Focalin is an ADD medicine/mental stimulant. It is the active component (d-isomer) of Ritalin & has very similar effects, uses, pharmacology, contraindications etc except dosing- your Ritalin dose divided by 2 equals your Focalin dose (20 mg Ritalin=10 mg Focalin etc.)

Thanks 3 Beers! That's what I get for reading a post late at night when my eyes won't focus properly. What a twit I am. :-)

So it’s basically a refined form of Ritalin. I was prescribed Focalin after I told the pdoc Concerta was too sedating. She said that Focalin didn’t have that effect. I started on 10 mgs a day, then 20 then 30, which is what I’m on now, and I don’t think I really feel much of anything yet. I’ll keep you all updated if I can focus enough to type something intelligible; right now I’m so distracted and unfocused I don’t know what the heck is going on. Whatever. Thanks to everyone for your input, I really appreciate it. Since none of my friends or family know anything about my ADHD and bipolar, its good having you all there.

ADDers respond to Ritalin or Dex/Adderall not both

You might want to try Adderall instead of Ritalin/Concerta/Focalin since it sounds like the Ritalin derivatives aren't working too well for you.

Not always, but usually people with ADD respond better to one Adderall/Dexedrine/Dextrostat OR the other Ritalin/Focalin/Concerta but NOT BOTH types of these medications.

I would start with Adderall since most doctors are more familiar with prescribing it & it is available in a wide range of doses. If Adderall doesn't work you might want to try Dexedrine (only available in 5 mg tablets) or Dextrostat (the same drug as Dexedrine but available in 10 mg tablets).

You might want to skip Adderall XR, it is no better than simply taking the same dosage of Adderall IR twice per day (& Adderall XR is probably more likely to cause substantial weight loss/anorexia since you don't have a break between doses in which to eat- Adderall/Dex pretty much destroys your appetite for food).

The reason I started Focalin and Concerta was because, after about 5 years taking Adderall I developed a tolerance to it, and its effectiveness decreased drastically.

Dexedrine is available in the U.S. in 10 mg. spansules. These are time-release capsules.

Dexedrine and Dexostrat affect me very differently. Dexedrine gives me energy and
Dexostrat makes me sleepy.
