Psyche Meds and Intelligence

Posted by Mimi on May 31, 2002, at 11:07:49

Dear all,

I've noticed a decline in my IQ since starting psyche meds. Does anyone else have this problem?
I used to read voraciously and now I find reading difficult. I also have memory problems. Anybody out there with ideas about the correlation between memory and psyche meds?
Thanks a million,

Mimi

hi. i have been through a lot of meds. most of which i couldn't tolerate. i'm not sure if they have effected my ability to think along with my memory but what did was Electro Convulsive Therapy. Jesus Christ I could remember nothing of my past. I forgot everything about a girl i was supossed to go live with in the future. and in general i could never remember what happened a minute before what i was currently doing. it was pure hell. gladly it got better. but perhaps some of it still stays with me now although it could just be the severe depression.

Anticholinergic antidepressants (like the tricyclics) are really bad for your cognition and memory. According to my experience, so are the SSRI's (maybe not so bad) and Effexor.

I wouldn't use any antidepressant that has significant anticholinergic effect, and I would augment my meds with a smart-drug like piracetam or vinpocetine. I find these two (piracetam and vinpocetine) to be very good to improve memory.

I wonder about the same thing. Everyone tells me it’s the “depression,” but that doesn’t explain why these deficits persisted even when my depression was supposedly in remission. I used to be quite intelligent and now I come across as Forrest Gump. I wonder how much of this is permanent, but since it looks like I’m going to spend the rest of my life drugged I doubt I’ll ever find out.

Beliala--That's morose. I think you're still depressed. One must harbor hope. Mimi
