Hi Guys!
I'm sure this topic's been beaten to death in older posts, but I haven't been able to find anything specific to my question.
My doctor is basically giving me a choice between Dexedrine Spansules or Adderall XR for my ADD. Any experience with either of the two? What are the pros and cons of each?
Again, I'm sorry if this question sounds too repetitive - I kinda need to know this in a hurry and didn't have time to sort through the older posts.
Thanks,
Puppy

> PuppyIMO, Adderall XR (and adderall in general) is superior to dexedrine/ dex spansules. Lasts longer, smoother, less jittery, less burnout.

Hi DiscoPuppy,
Dexedrine spansules seem to be harsher to a lot of people when it is exiting the system than Adderall XR. However, I found Adderall XR to provoke more anxiety. I would go with dexedrine first, and then try adderall if you can't tolerate it.

Where does ritalin fit in. Is it better than both, less anxiety or what??

DP,
I cannot answer from direct experience because the goverment of canada has yet too deem adderall a worthy drug for my use.
I could not tolerate ritalin - too jitery.
Dex SR work well but the crash is harsh. I get about 2 hours of ADD-on-steroids about 8 hours after taking the dex spansules. I take a small amount to regular dex at night to manage the crash.
My research says that Adderall XR is as effective as Dexedrine but the ride is smoother. This happens because the 4 amphetamine salts have different activation profiles - kick in and wear off at different times.
Of course, individual chemistry will out in the end.
Good luck
Paulp.s. Adderall in canada soon I hear.

Thanks everyone for your reply. This helps me a lot. I think the reason why the doctor gave me a choice was because I told him I wanted a sustained release-type stimulant.
By the way, is there a sustained release version of Ritalin?

Ritalin made me jittery too, but Adderall XR has been great! I have not tried Dex.
Adderall XR has actually helped decrease my overall anxiety, and the letdown as the med is leaving my system is very gradual.
I do find myself getting a little depressed/irritable later in the evening when the med is out of my system, but I have found that if I watch TV or read, I am able to manage it better.
But even the temporarty downtime is well worth how great I feel for 8-9 hours while the Adderall is working.
Good Luck in getting the XR in Canada.

Haven't tried Adderall XR but want to...I like regular adderall but its too short-acting. All-day Dex is great for me, except its true that the crash is a bear.

Expertly stated and explained.

Concerta (up to 12 hours)

In reply to What's Focalin, then? (nm), posted by DiscoPuppy on June 1, 2002, at 16:42:34
Focalin is a refined version of ritalin/methylphenidate, and contains only the d isomer (the more potent isomer).
Ritalin is to Adderall, as Focalin is to Dexedrine.

What's the difference between Focalin and Concerta then?

Focalin contains only d-methylphenidate (the more potent ritalin isomer) while Concerta contains racemic (a 50/50 mix) of d and l methylphenidate, only it is time release (i.e. the only difference between plain old Ritalin and Concerta is that the latter is time release).
