New diagnosis added - ADD, questions

Posted by rainbowlight on May 25, 2002, at 2:56:40

Pdoc thinks I am ADD (on top of Bipolar II, OCD and GAD). She just added Wellbutrin to my Lamictal/Remeron/Risperdal combo. She says it helps people with ADD focus. Any thought/experiences on this?

BP II and ADD are almost inditinguishable, for me. . and with good reason, these dopamine/kindling disorders all work along the same lines. Migraines, temporal lobe seizures. . .Um, what was the question? I remember that Remeron knocked me out; haven't taken Risperdal. Wellbutrin is a fairly weak dopaminergic that to some extent addresses ADD, for some people. Many pdocs will waffle with that rather than go right for the "hard stuff." (!) Dex and Adderall.

It's not the Remeron/Risperdal combo that's affecting your ability to focus, is it?

Wellbutrin tends to increase anxiety*, but it may be that your other meds will buffer that.

I'm pretty sure you've read this from me before, but if not: wellbutrin caused bad anxiety/agitation for me although I am clearly ADD. Ritalin and adderall are great, make me feel calm and collected. So don't think if you respond poorly to Wellbutrin that the diagnosis needs questioning. Meds are so individual as I know you know.... deprenyl and clonidine etc are used sometimes too.

Dr. Sogn over on the webmd board specializes in ADD and one can ask him individual medication questions... pretty cool. He says when he sees wellbutrin work for ADD it takes the very high end dose, 300 or 450, and works after something like 8 weeks. (can't recall the exact time he said, just recall it was much longer than I would have guessed).

Good luck.

Hi, I just restarted some Wellbutrin a few days ago in response to seasonal depression coming back. I never found it to help my attentional problems (focus) that much, BUT, it does help with motivation and energy to some degree. Be careful though, it might make your OCD/GAD troubles worse. Aren't you taking Zoloft, too?

Thanks for your advice, you guys are so great. I keep reading from others too that the Wellbutrin makes the anxiety worse, pdoc thought it would help. Well, I guess it will be trial and error again huh? Pdoc gave me Ativan to use in case I need it. So far I am into day 2 and I feel pretty good, nice and calm, hope it lasts! LOL! I am definately going to go to the website for the doctor you mentioned. Can you give me the web address to get there? Mitch, I had to stop taking the Zoloft, if I took it at the therapeutic level for me it made me very physically sick, when I took it down it didn't work. So pdoc pulled me off it. I was dissapointed, it worked so well for the first month.

Hi RBL,

Zoloft is definitely very nauseating. Website? I guess I am a little lost. It may have been on another thread. Maybe I was talking about Dr. Amen (ADHD stuff)? If so, I honestly can't remember it! :) Oh, and of course, I don't have it bookmarked either! If you do a quick google search you will hit it. Oh, that's Ok, I just did one myself it is
http://www.amenclinic.com/

That is of course, if that is what you are looking for and if that is the doctor I told you about. ADD symptoms are really fun, huh?

I was on wellbutrin SR (300 mg/day) for depression but was still feeling extremely lethargic. While on the WB I started noticing a slightly increased ability to focus and organize at work. My doc and I thought I might be ADD so we added dexedrine SR. I take 40 mg/day which is a kind of high dose but for me it calms me down and helps me focus. I don't suffer from anxiety though so the stimulants don't bother me. I've heard people say that prozac is stimulating but when I took it I slept about 18 hours a day.
