How to handle an upset stomach due to meds?

Posted by Krazy Kat on May 12, 2002, at 11:07:21

I was just wondering if anyone has found a good, consistent way to handle an upset stomach that results from the meds one is taking.

I'm taking Zantac daily now - it helps, but is sometimes not enough.

Of course, an improved diet would be useful...

thanks.

Ginger works very well. You can buy it at the health food stores in capsules. It's cheap, about $5.00 and really seems to calm down acid/nauseau. Taking your meds with food helps too, but I am sure you have already tried that. Sipping on grapefruit soda helps too (Squirt is one brand).

KK, reading rainbow's post made me remember when I had severe nausea from a combo of pneumonia & my meds. What settled my stomach better than anything else was eating ginger (ginger capsules are probably easier but I needed quite a bit of ginger) with a small piece of apple & drinking Koala Spring's Kiwi, Lime, & Grapefruit drink - fairly tart & slightly bubbly. My stomach still felt upset but I knew I wouldn't gag or vomit then.

Frozen ginger ale. Fill your ice cube tray with ginger ale. It makes cubes that are much softer than ice from water, so your teeth will be okay. The cold and the ginger ale really help.

My psychiatric problems seem to come hand in hand with stomach problems...leading me to think a stressed body can trigger the brain to go a little crazy..

anyway whatever the chicken or egg is who knows..but I get the best stomach medicines ever..

anything with a "zole" at the end..I get omeprazole...or losec brand in UK...one every 24 hours and your stomach stops creating acid...bullet proof to alcohol and also helfull with food poisining and of course psychiatric meds..

When I run out of losec due to laziness or being buzy..I need at least 4 zantac every four hours to stop bleeding...thats up to 24 a day..

thats how good losec is..

Be careful with grapefruit juice with medications

It speeds up to the metabolisation of the medications - or something similar. Maybe someone else out there knows the scientific explanation?

omega man:

thanks so much for the info.

this is one of the few "physical" complaint areas i am familiar with. my dad has been to the hospital twice because his stomach was bleeding so much that he lost, i'll get it worng, but it was outrageous, like 1/3 of his blood. (or would he be dead if it were that much? ;))

anyway, is there anyway you can build those stomach membranes back up? i fear that the amount of bleeding your tummy is doing is going to cause grave issues in the future. he is on something like what you recommend the rest of his life. or is that the case for you now?

frankly, i see myself heading that way, and would love to avoid it.

I'll say these new "zole" drugs saved my life..I've had them for ten years...and the cure is profound....I used to have to eat boiled rice and water some days..while having to screen every other food for what it could do..

Now I can eat whatever I need ...I can eat curries..drink alcohol....
The losec has zero side effects...except sometimes if I run out and have to take zantac I can tell my head seems fresher...but then that could just be the body saying "wake up" time...the acids coming through !!

Thats ten years with no problems...in that time I was able to rebuild my body ..do intense living and be free from illness...(physical anyway)

The only problems I have are bloatings which happened to my stomach structure muscles for the three years before losec happened...

I ended up in hospital three years ago for bleeding...inside..very scary..my heart gave out...well I was so very weak I could hardly stand...and went to ER...I could feel the blood going into my stomach....and it rises to your breath...a very scary day..I have no idea how much I lost as my psychiatric symptoms lead me unable to get the losec presription..so I seemed to be so crazy...that docs just looked at that behaviour..

gone of track....I'm trying to say...losec really does the job...your stomach rebuilds..I suppose everyone is different..for example it took me three years before I could drink...alcohol..a very good fitness test for the gut..

My main drugs...which keep me together are losec and omega 3...I have tons of others which I can play with to get my brain out of or into various "states"

don't rule out being tested for bugs like helibacter pylori...taking losec hides that..

Thanks, very helpful. Perhaps I should be considering the option of starting on a stomach med now. Dr.'s don't seem to take my Dad's stomach illness very seriously, but your hospital description sounds awfully familiar. ;) And I'll tell you, it sure scares the hell out of your loved ones. He also had surgery for the same symptoms this last fall. It's crazy, as if they just write it off as "indigestion" until it gets out-of-hand.

I, think, too, about what these meds are potentially doing to my weak tummy. AND, I eat what I want to, still drink a little caffeine, and only attempt to include some whole grains (that really helps me).

Thanks again. I will mention this to my dr. next time.
