Effexor XR - Dosage?

Posted by LynnPerley on May 2, 2002, at 17:55:41

I've been on Effexor XR for about 35 days now. 150mg. My primary MD told me to take it for three months and come back and see him then to talk about continuing or tapering off. Its wonderful for anxiety and helped my depression as well, but the somewhat sedating and demotivating effect was bothering me. I discovered that taking it in the evening helped some, but not enough. I almost called the doc after the first 30 days, but decided to refill the scrip and give it another month.

I'm 99% positive I took 2 capsules yesterday by accident. I must have taken one when I got home from work, and then I forgot I had taken one and took another at about an hour before bedtime. I felt a little bit of a rush like feeling about 30 minutes after I took the second one which made me realize I may have taken two. Last night I slept better than I have since I started taking this, and I've had much less of the sedated kind of feeling all day. I wonder if I need to increase my dosage? I'm going back to the one capsule per evening and giving it a few more days before I call the doctor, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experiences or observations to share?

I had a vague memory of the permitted dosage of Effexor XR being VERY large, so I checked...

You're all clear, it's perfectly sensible.
In fact, I remember someone saying that at higher doses, EffexorXR is much more energizing and sometimes much more effective too. :)
If you have a decent relationship with your doc, I'd say tell him/her the truth, that you took two by accident and felt much better!

A seperate suggestion: Get one of those 7-day pillboxes, fill it on monday or at least on the same day every week, and when the little section is empty, no more drugs that day! :)

I personally found Effexor to be much more effective at higher doses (300+ mg). In fact, one of the reasons I stopped taking it, was that after a while, the maximum dosage (450 mg) stopped being effective! I apparently developed quite a tolerance, which is most unusual for me.

150 mg is quite a low dose. I find it makes me less lethargic at higher doses.I would definitley discuss upping your dose with your doctor.

Good luck!
