Parnate - Side Effects?

Posted by JEANIE on April 10, 2002, at 20:47:25

Hi
For two weeks I have been taking 10mg of Parnate at 7am and 3pm. Today
I started on my third pill (total 30mg)
About two hours after my third dose I started to flush and get hot and blotchy. My heart was also pounding/
Shortly after the symptoms started i measured my blood pressure and it was 110/65 so it doesn't look like it was hypertension.
I am interested in hearing your comments or if anyone else experienced these effects from Parnate,
Thanks

Jeannie--I've taken parnate for several years --the flushing is from vasodilation. Parnate blocks the sympathetic system which constricts blood vessels and maintains bloodpressure---without the sympathetic innervation -blood vessels dilate, hence the flushing and low bloodpressure. Low bloodpressure can make your head pound --make sure you maintain fluid intake and salt. Also be weary of histamine containing foods such as tomatoes they have a considerable amount of histamine and histamine is a powerful vasodilator. Remember histamine is a "mono" amine too and of course parnate is a mono-amine-oxidase-inhibitor so histamine isn't brokendown as it normally would be. I think you'll find that the biggest problem with maoi's is indeed the "Low" bloodpressure effect. Divided doses helps and make sure to definitely maintain hydration with adequate water intake last thing you need is dehyration contributing to the already lowerred bloodpressure!!!!!!!

Have you ever experienced lethargy or anhedonia while on Parnate?
It is supposed to also have to due with the sympathetic block. The way I understood it, is that Noradreneline is replaced by a different chemical which is less potent, therefore more lethargig feeling.
I am going to start Parnate and was really wondering about lethargy.
My other question: I have Panic disorder and wanted to know if the it makes you very anxious?
Thanks for your response
Margit

Hi Margit
I was extremely tired the first week or so of taking parnate,
but that is gradually going now.
I too suffer from anxiety, specifically social phobia. The parnate has not
really made the anxiety worse (apart from the night i had no sleep)
The parnate, at the same time, has not yet improved my phobia.

Thanks Dennison for your informative reply.
I took 30mg again today and did not really experience the symptoms.
Hopefully soon it will start working on the social phobia - (weight loss would be nice too!)

Thanks so much for responding; this really helped. I have one question though; what time are you taking your 3rd pill? You said that you take the others at 7am and 3pm - just curious. Thanks for a response.
Margit

I take the first at 7am, 2nd at 10am and the 3rd at
3pm
The only symptoms I have now are the pounding heart, cold chills and insomnia.
Hope they go!
Take Care

HI yes sympathetic block is from norepinephrine being replaced by a so-called false neurotrasmiiter ""octopamine"", hence octopamine is released from norepinephrine secretory granules--""storage vesicles"" , but octopamine has virtually no effect, it's only 1% potency of actual norepinephrine in it's abilty to provoke a post synaptic response ,thus a functional(((sympathetic block))) is manifested. Yes this indeed is the main culprit causing possible lethargy- as dysautonomic effects from the block , impede normal cardiovascular responses--such as inc. in cardiac output to exercise, and of course the low blood pressure in the standing position causes a sense of weakness. .............................................................................This sympathetic block becomes most intense in early morning hr's. as false neurotransmitter is allowed to build during sleep, but during waking status little by little it is displaced and some degree of sympathetic function is regained. Like I mentioned, this sympathetic block seems to be real troublesome for some , others barely notice it- depends on just how much of norepinephrine gets replaced by the ineffective "octopamine" , it never totally displaces--""replaces"" all the norepinephrine just a %, so some norepinephrine is released with the octopamine!!!!!!!!!!
