withdrew milnacipran-feel great!

Posted by mat on April 7, 2002, at 9:39:55

hi
i wanted to write a few sentences about an experience i have never
made before: after about one month on milnacipran (psycho-babbler ben wrote that
this drug is not yet available in the usa, it is a snri like venlafaxin) i was depressed like
never before. so i stopped taking this drug immediately, without tapering off.
and believe it or not-from the next day on i really felt great. i didn't know that antidepressants
can make your depression so much worse, but dr.kramer confirmed that. milnacipran from now on is the first example of
a specific "depressant" for me, because it only made me feel miserable without having any other side-effects.
does anybody else have similar experiences with other antidepressants?

hey ben!
maybe milnacipran will work fine in your brain. i do think that it is a powerful drug, because it really had a prominent influence on my mood. but unfortunately in the wrong direction.
and-it indeed is a very often prescribed ad here in austria. i of course told my pdoc about my ixel-withdrawal, and
she said that my reaction is by no means the usual response to this drug, because it's widely used and a lot of her patients are very happy with it.
i think that my reaction to this drug is an evidence that antidepressants in general are drugs that target the right transmitter-systems.
but i also think that depression is a very heterogenous disease and not simply the lack of a transmitter in a special area in the brain (at least not of the same
neurotransmitter in the same area in every depressed person). that is, i'm not disappointed about the effects of milnacipran (at the moment, i of course was one week ago), and if i where a physician i would nevertheless
recommend it to depressed persons.

I have taken iXel for 3 months.
It had terrible effects on me; in the begininng I felt a great improvement in my mood which actaully worsened as I continued taking the med.
I was extremely anxious while taking ixel and very, VERY irritated. I wanted to fight anybody and everybody. I could not listen to any kind of critique.
I highly do not recommend this medication.
I stopped taking it.

Yes! I feel like hell. I think I am even more depressed now that I've been on celexa for the past few weeks. Plus I am very confused and sick to my stomach. To make things worse, my dr. is being patronizing and telling me to give it more time and just learn to deal with it. He even told me to 'just smile", it's not that bad. I don't expect ignorant attitudes from my pdoc, but thats what I'm getting and I think I am going to make the decision to stop this med, alone.

Hildi, I'm so sorry you've had such a bad experience with your Pdoc...there is no excuse for this type of behavior towards a patient who is seeking help. Unfortunately, these experiences are all too common; I have also found some Pdoc's to be arrogant and condescending. Sometimes it's difficult not to blame yourself for the doctor's inappropriate behavior--especially when you're not feeling so great about yourself anyway....

My suggestion is that you find another Pdoc who you can trust and who demonstrates that he/she is willing to work with you to find the right meds. They do exist, really they do!

And please do be careful about stopping meds on your own...
