restless leg syndrome?

Posted by LiLi80 on March 19, 2002, at 14:24:36

Anybody hear of this before? I think i have it. My grandmother has it too. I desribed it as anxiety, but then I heard about RLS and i think i have this and not anxiety. My symptoms are pain in my legs at night that make me want to go running just to calm down. It has been bad in the past. I used to toss and turn all night long. I still do , but my ex -bf used to hover over me while i wiggled around on the bed underneath him and try and get comfy. He got sick of hovering over me waiting to go to sleep. He would instead grab my hand pull me in my common area at school, put some music on and we would ballroom dance in my suite. Sounds romantic huh? Yeah I thought it was cute too, but he was doing it just to get my legs tired enough to fall alseep. And i just found out that anti depressants make RLS worse. just my luck...

Well, there's RLS like the kind a little kid displays who has to go to the restroom really bad. You can also feel this if you are anxious...whatever. ;)

And then there is RLS, sometimes compared with "akathisia", which can be felt from taking antipsychotic medicines and sometimes antidepressants (but not usually).

I have felt both. hmmmm....but they are not the same feeling to me at all.

I don't know if we are on the same page?

Regards,
John

I am pretty sure isnt from my meds cause i had this when i wasnt taking meds, it sounds like a made up disease but it explains the pain that i get in my legs. Its supposed to be common for the elderly , but its also genetic so who knows. The common treatment is giving a depressant, but that would defeat me taking an antidepressant. :/

Yes, you should ask your pdoc about that. From what little I know about it, it seems awful. My sister knows someone who has it and who says that the muscles in the legs have this crawly feeling—like they're going to pop through the skin and wiggle away. It's said to make you feel the need to move your legs all the time.

This seems to be lumped in the Sleep Disorders category along with sleep apnea and chronic insomnia, the latter being my trouble.

I wish you luck.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) helps a lot of people with RLS go to sleep, because of its anticholinergic action. 50 mg at bedtime is enough. I've also found Neurontin to work for the same purpose.
