Hi,
I was just diagnosed with ADHD at the ripe age of 41! It actually is a relief. I am such a scatterbrain, at least now I know why. I went to a Psych, and he didn't seem too familiar with ADHD in adults. He prescribed 100 mg of Provigil 1X a day. (starting dose is 200 mg) I have been on it a few days and it has done nothing for me. It is for Narcolepsy? I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder 8 yearts ago after my son became critically ill. I take 1.5 mg of klonopin for that (not much) and it has been under good control. He told me he will not put me on adderall or ritalin due to the anxiety. Has anyone else run into this? I feel like I am on a placebo. I called and told him this, his secretary called me back and told me to continue on the same dose for 2 weeks.
Thanks for any opinions.

Hello:
I myself was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and I have a history of anxiety-panic, social phobia, and sometimes just plain old generalized. I also take 1.5mg klonopin daily and 700 mg Neurontin (for anxiety and hypomania). My doctor nonetheless prescribed me adderall XR for my ADD, and I really don't find that it exacerbates my anxiety. Maybe you can ask your doctor about one of these longer-acting stimulants, like adderall XR, Concerta, or Dexedrine Spansules, as I believe the long-acting preparations are better for the mood and less likely to cause rebound anxiety. I have no experience with provigil, but I know that it is certainly not a first-line treatment for ADD like the above-mentioned medications. Hope this was of some help and good luck.

Hi,
I have depression and anxiety along with ADD and like Peter, Adderall has not made my anxiety worse. I have been on one antidepressant or another which I also think stabalized the condition.
If the Klonepan is doing that for you, I honestly don't see why the psychiatrist refuses to prescribe stimulants. Maybe you want another psychiatrist or a second opinion if you generally like your him but just disagree on this issue?
I know from personal experience how aggravating that type of situation can me. It just seems like psychiatrists get locked into certain modes of thinking without considering each patient's case on an individual basis.
Good luck!
Misty

Thank you for your help.
I am seeing the Pdoc in 2 weeks, but thanks to your advice I have another appointment in a Month with one that specializes in ADHD. Hey I have waited 41 years, a couple more weeks can't hurt! :)

Hi,
I have a tentative dx of ADHD, also diagnosed post-40 and terrible anxiety (paranoia, psychotic tendencies) and yes, narcolepsy.
I take 400 mg of Provigil a day and it wiped out the daytime sleeping jags, I don't know if it's helped the ADHD, but it doesn't add to my anxiety, as I fear other ADHD stims might.
I know this doesn't answer your question, god I'd give anythng if it answered my own. Are we all, in the end guinea pigs?trouble
