med recommendations?

Posted by maximillian on March 10, 2002, at 5:35:20

could someone(possibly dr bob also) recommend an antidep/gad med(s) that will have less sides(especially libido loss and sleeplessness) instead of the effexor xr and wellbutrin combo i am on? also a sleep aid better than the ambien i was originally given? also, should i stop seeing a pdoc and drop my neuro? would a pdoc be better able to help mild to med. depression and gad symptom? presently seeing a social who refered ne to the neuro. i'm fifty, 6', no medical problems(other than the dep and gad) 185-190#. just a recommendation. the libido bothers me more than anything else. thanks to all that answer. need to solve the 'doc' question asap.

thanks, max

Hi,

I'm not a doctor, but here are some of my thoughts. There are many medicine
options, but based on what your concerns you posted...
Remeron is an antidepressant that generally signifacantly enhancences
sleep quality without loss of libido. You may be able to take this without any other
sleep aid. Side effects may include drowsiness at lower dowsness
and mild weight gain. At higher doses it is a bit more stimulating and less sedating.
Unless you really are having some neurological dysfunction a well reputed pdoc ought to be
able to work well with you. This is just a suggestion to talk to your doctor about.
There are other medicine choices. Your results may vary. Please establish good communication with your doctor about your
concerns, he should be able to help tailor medicines to meet your concerns. Most importantly
you want to get your mental health back up and running.
Drop a line if you have more questions.

Best wishes.
John

I would stick with the same pdoc unless you feel that he is not doing a good job of treating you. (That is not the same as meds not working or having intolerable side effects.)

Staying with one pdoc for a long time is highly underrated, IMHO.

Talk to your pdoc and let him know that you want treatment, but you are very concerned about sexual side effects and sleeplessness. That information will help him suggest possible meds for you.

You could ask him about Serzone (supposed to not cause sexual problems or insomnia) or Remeron (same, but it does sometimes cause weight gain, sometimes a lot) Also, buspar is not very popular anymore, but it was supposed to work for gad and dep.
