ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS WITH ANTI-SEIZURE MEDS?

Posted by beardedlady on March 4, 2002, at 19:07:50

I have taken 4 mg. of Gabitril for the past four nights. I have carpal tunnel syndrome already, and have actually just started doing a hand-weight routine. But I could swear that all the joints in my upper body have begun to hurt because of this med--my wrists, my fingers, my shoulders. Even some muscles in my chest and arms hurt.

I had this reaction to an antibiotic once--Tequin. I took two doses (two days), and I couldn't write my name or walk the stairs. (It's the same class of drug as Cipro; lots of the folks taking Cipro after September 11th had this problem!) I stopped taking it after the third dose, but the problem didn't clear up until two months later. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but I knew it was a bad med reaction. A second opinion confirmed that. I haven't had trouble since September.

Now I hurt, but not as bad as with the Tequin. Even if I stop it, I know the symptoms may not go away for quite some time.

Anyone have this experience? Did the symptoms go away when you got used to the med? If you stopped the med, did symptoms go away?

I have had this effect--and did develop carpal tunnel syndrome, bum knee etc on long release ritalin (Concerta). I'm slow though--I usually think it's my body until I go off the med and the symptoms go away (sloooowly) (and yes I do the carpal tunnel exercises to aid the process). Effexor XR gave me fibromylagia type pains. They all effect us differently. But you are right to listen to your body.

Hi,

You might think about what med you may have *discontinued* recently that could be causing this. I was on Gabitril for about three months and titrating upward and did notice some increased chest "tightness", but no real arthritic type things (that effect did go away with time). I get some "chondroital"-type tightness in my upper abdomen with higher-dose Neurontin however (that has been persistent-mainly because I continue to take Neurontin because I respond so well to it otherwise).
