New to site...Would like advice on Effexor/WellBut

Posted by JLC on February 27, 2002, at 6:58:53

Hello All..May I say that I am so glad to have found this site!!
My problem is this..
I was diagnosed with depression 2 years ago.
I was first put on Zoloft, no help. Then Wellbutrin, a little better. Then added Effexor,
Lots better. Then for some strange reason, taken off and put on Celexa. Way WRONG!! No good ofr me!
So, I am back to Wellbutrin; 200mg per day and Effexor 225mg per day.
Previous problems were a very difficult childhood,
3 extremely difficult marriages, 3 children and a complete hystorectomomy.
Problem now, Since 2 years ago when I was put on these anti-depressants I have gained in excess of 50 pounds!! Bout ready to do something DRASTIC!!
AND, I have NO sex drive whatsoever!! This is ruining my new marriage!!
I want to get off of these pills! But not quite sure how to. My Doctors say no not now, but I am ready!
The problem is if I even miss ONE dose of the effexor I am in terrible shape!! Nausea, vomiting,
no energy just want to sleep.
So anybody out there got any advise?
Please help!!!

Continue taking the Welbutrin, but slowly taper off of the Effexor. Take 200mg Effexor per day for one week, then 175mg the next week, then 150mg the next week, then 100mg the next week, then 75mg the next week, then take 50mg the sixth week and ask your Doctor to prescribe a diiferent medicine to replace the Effexor but doesn't have weight-gain as a side effect. i am tapering off of Serzone, a perfect medicine for me which caused minimal weight-gain, but because of it being hard on the liver i have to stop taking it. i will probably start on the anti-depressant Welbutrin next week, and take it together with the anti-anxiety Clonopin that i just recently started.

Weight gain and lack of sex drive are common problems with many antidepressants. Wellbutrin oftentimes minimizes these side effects which in your case are being caused by Effexor. Ask your doctor if he thinks that increasing the dose of Wellbutrin might help you.

Are you exercising or have you tried a program such as weight watchers?

I think that quitting the Effexor could be a major risk for you. What if you can't find a different medication to control your depression?
