Can someone explain what the symptoms of bipolar II are? I have always had a depression that has been agitated with insomnia and thinking gets really strange. Thanks

> JohnHi John,
Have you ever had "pure" episodes of hypomania where you felt on top of the world for little reason-get chatty-have trouble sleeping for several days running? Also, if you get that type of reaction from taking certain antidepressants, that is somewhat tell-tale. If you experience some agitation and mild thought disturbance while depressed doesn't necessarily mean you are bipolar. However, there are some unipolar depressives who benefit from adjunctive mood stabilizers-lithium, Lamictal, Neurontin, i.e.

Can you describe the strange thoughts, and any other symptoms, that you have during these episodes? Agitation doesn't necessarily mean that you are manic or hypomanic.
Manic/hypomanic states in which a person feels irritable, agitated, suicidal, etc. rather than euphoric are sometimes called "mixed" or "dysphoric."
