New to GAD; on Wellbutrin and Xanax

Posted by Mason on January 7, 2002, at 10:14:18

Wow! What a site! I was turned onto this site from another health board, and this place is great! I'd like to say hi to everyone, and look forward to joining in on these discussions.

I started suffering from panic attacks/GAD after a horrible ER visit for a migraine last February. Since then, I've been on Zoloft, Paxil, and Buspar without any benefit. I am currently on Wellbutrin (100mg, time released, once a day). I have also been on Xanax for the last several months; ranging from three to five .25mg tablets per day.

I haven't seen much about Wellbutrin and GAD or panic. My pyschiatrist is trying this, since we've had no success with the old standbys like Zoloft and Paxil.

Has anybody taken this and had luck with it? I've been on it for about 4 weeks, and don't feel any different. I'm so tired of the nervous feelings, and the worrying about the anxiety.

Thanks for any/all replies,

Jason (I couldn't log on with my name, so picked Mason)

Welcome to the site, I do hope you find it helpful. If you get a chance/time check out the social board too.

I've been on Effexor XR for a little over a year. I felt better almost immediately taking it, (thinking problems helped right away.) I've had doctors tell me I have anxiety and had been seeing a psychologist for two years before I tried the effexor. Other ADs hadn't helped me and most made me worse.

About four months after being on the effexor I noticed a real difference something was gone. After some thought I realized it was a constant feeling of nervousness. So that is what they meant by generalized anxiety!

I am a bit thick headed. Everyone can say there's a full moon out but if I can't see I'll argue till blue in the face that it's a new moon. So if it has helped me and your combo doesn't work you may want to give it a try.

A lifetime ago my psych says he would have diagnosed me with the post stress thing, had I got assistance at the time. Oh to be so young and naive again!

Welcoming Willow

Hi Willow,

Thank you for the reply and the supportive words. I'm very glad to hear that you've found something that works for you! That is excellent! I have not tried Effexor, and it is on the list to try after Wellbutrin. Have you had any sexual side effects with it? I did with both Paxil and Zoloft, which would have been easier to handle, if they had alleviated the anxiety.

I always wonder how/when it will feel to be anxiety-free, and imagine it will be exactly how it was for you. I'll just realize after awhile that I'm not nervous/anxious anymore. I long for that day! Even though I try not to think about it, it remains lurking in my mind all the time.

Thanks again for the reply!

Jason

Of all the meds I've tried effexor is the only one that caused sexual problems for me. There was a doctor who was into reasearch answering questions here. For some I think unknown reason the meds that work can have these unfortunate side effects.

There's a link here somewhere to go so that you can view some speeches made by health professionals on certain topics. Hopefully someone will be able to direct you to it in case you are interested in viewing it.

On a positive note there are ways to treat the side-effects. I've noticed on my own that when my dosage is lowered a little the side effects are gone and I still have the benefits of the medication.

BEST WISHES
Willow

Well, you could try Effexor XR or Remeron. Combined with Xanax, I don't think you should have any panic attacks. Your dose of Xanax is low. Dose reported in the literature for Panic disorder are up to 10mg/day.

Wellbutrin is not supposed to help you with GAD/Panic.

If you mean the University of Chicago Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds on the Internet, it's one of those little links at the top of the main page. Here:

Thanks for spreading the word! :-)
