Just wondered what diffculties people have taken zyprexa for and at what dose?
It has benn suggested to me for my anxiety , ruminations/ obsessive thinking and inability to stay asleep for more than 2-3 hours, but its an antipsychotic isnt it/ I dont think I have any psychotic symptoms.
Any ideas or info would be very helpful!glenn

glenn,
I am not psychotic. I was on it for my distorted thinking (suicidal ideation, thoughts of self-harm, etc.). It did a great job for me for that. I went off it because of the weight gain, though.

glenn,
Zyprexa is often rx'd for people with Bipolar disorder, ruminations, obsessive thinking, manic behavior, etc. It's not just for people who display psychotic behavior. I take 2.5 mgs at bedtime which has been the perfect dose for me. Many take a much higher dose.
As akc said, if weight gain is a concern for you, you may want to talk to your doc about it. Many have reported weight gain with the Zy. I gained 45 lbs in 10 months after I started taking it. My doctor added Topamax, and along with a good diet and some exercise, I have been able to lose 20 of those.
Good luck and let us know how it works for you.

Zyprexa was a god send for me. I don't know what I would have done without it. Although it hastn't taken away the depression.
It gave me complete calm within hours. I would definately recommend using it as a base drug whilst you are testing out different ADs.
My only concern is that the Zyprexa might completely negate the effects of the ADs. Does anyone know if it can do this?

Over time it relieved a lot of the depression symptoms. However, the depression came back, but now the situation seems to be bi-polar instead of uni-polar, so Zyprexa wasn't to blame. But a lot of literature is very up on using zyprexa to treat depression

Glenn,
I DO tend to get psychotic at times, and if you look up Zyprexa it will tell you it's used as an anti-psychotic drug....but, just like Klonipin can treat anxiety-it also treats people like my husband, who have periodic limb movement! Get my meaning here, I hope?
Anyway...I take 2.5mg doses AM, Noon, and at Dinner time...at bedtime I take the 5mg dosage. I too saw an immediate effect when I was first put on the Zyprexa...but my dosage was SKY HIGH, and I was like the walking dead to be honest. Since my shrink and I have tweaked the dosage, I find it helps me STAY calm so that I don't 'head bang' when I become upset/infuriated. It still though makes me alittle tired during the day, but nothing I can't ride out.
As for it working with anti-depressants....OH YES! I asked my shrink about all of that...I take Effexor and Wellbutrin along with the Zyprexa and things are working (knock on wood) spledidly for me. No weight gain either, for me at least.
