Hello, I just started to take Zyprexa for anxiety and a speech problem. I been on for about four days and haven't felt anything. Does anyone know how long it takes to kick in? How long should I wait to try something else. Also, I tried although anxiety medications, like Xanax, but the effects seemed to wear off. Does Zyprexa wear off too? I'm taking 2.5mg/day at night. Thanks for any help. :-)

Hi David,
I'm definitely not experienced with meds, but I find myself wondering why Zyprexa would be rx'd as a stand-alone treatment for anxiety (I have no idea about the speech problems). I take Zy, 2.5 mgs, for Bipolar II. It worked for me immediately, but only for the BP II symptoms, not my anxiety. I took Xanax for a very long time and recently have switched to Klonopin. I would just think that there would be several alternative medications that a doctor would want to try first before trying an anti-psychotic for treating anxiety. But PLEASE remember, I'm no doctor and I could be completely off base here. Hopefully someone with some medical knowledge can shed some light on this, I'd really like to know.
As far as how long it will take, for some meds work right away, others take weeks, for some the meds never work. Your mileage may vary.
I wish you all the best of luck,

Hi! How are you? When I took Zyprexa it took me about 7days to feel the intial effects of the medication and a month to feel the full effects. So, you should start to feel something REALLY soon....have a good day!

Hi, thanks for the replys. Xanax worked for me at first, but the effects were off. Hopefully the Zeprexa will work soon. I'm 22. Does anyone know the typical dose for it? What are some of the stuff you feel when you're on it? Thanks.

Hello David...
I take Zyprexa (have for over a year now). My dosage is as follows:
2.5MG in the morning, 2.5MG in the early afternoon, and 5MG before bed. This dosage works very well for me (when I started out on Zyprexa I was like a 'zombie', my dosage was way too high!!). For "me" being on Zyprexa has calming affects. I also take Alprazolam (Xanax) for panic/anxiety attacks (find the generic works just as well as the 'real deal')...the Alprazolam is, again-for "me", way more 'sedating' when I take it then the Zyprexa...the Zyprexa also helps me to NOT have to take as much of the Alprazolam as I used to take.
Good luck to you, let me know how this turns out for you...you may just need a bit of a higher dosage of it.....or it may start to work anytime for you now!

I started to feel something within hours of taking it... it took a few weeks for the maximu effect to build up, but it certainly started helping very quickly!!

I too take Zyprexa for it's calming abilities and it seems to calm me down within a couple of hours of taking it. However, its not doing much to lift the depression. It seems to stop the anxious feelings I get when I take the anti-depressants. I'm still searching for a good antidepressant.
